Disability Retirement

The federal government allows employees who are unable to work to retire under a disability retirement. It is in the best interest of both employees and the federal government for employees to remain gainfully employed in their current grade or pay level, as long as they can provide useful and efficient service without endangering themselves, others or government property.
Disability retirement should be the very last option and should be used only when attempts have been made to preserve an individual's employment, and those attempts have failed.

Order our Disability Retirement guide to educate yourself on the rules and regulations concerning disability retirement for federal employees.

Been three months since i sent letter to change my life insurance. Claimed they didnt receive it. Sent another letter certified. They received it the 15th of this month. This is utter bs. Now my rates have gone up because i turned 60 which was the reason i wanted to change it to avoid this bigger hit on my check. Anyone know how to get this accomplished or is it gonna take a year like disability retirement?

I also cancelled coverage at age 60. There is no form; you must mail a signed letter to OPM's Retirement Office at: U.S. Office of Personnel Management Retirement Operations Center P.O. Box 45 Boyers, PA 16017-0045 The cancellation or reduction must be in writing and have an original signature by the insured retiree. Took two days, I couldn't believe how quickly it was processed!

I believe the change goes into effect at the end of the month in which OPM receives your letter. You can call with OPM to verify receipt and its effective date.

Well here we are in 2 months after second letter sent still no change. I called several weeks after my second letter(certified) was delivered. Guy verified they had received it said it might be a month or or so before anything is actually changed. Just checked October statement online, still no change. Also said it would be backdated and i would receive the money back but i'm skeptical of that also. Anyone have any ideas how to get this change accomplished? Do i need to call and ask for a supervisor or manager or what? I mean how hard can this simple request be? Do i need to hire a damn lawyer just to get my insurance changed over? I want to call and raise frickin hell but am afraid they would further delay it on purpose, who knows nowadays. No excuse for this crap.

Hi Ken, what I would do is call and ask if a specialist has been assigned to adjust/correct your deductions and for their name and contact information. Then I would follow up with that individual to ensure your questions are answered, such as the amount of extra pay due to you and when/how you can expect to receive it. I hope this helps... and if not, or if you find a more effective solution, please let us know!

When you originally called and they verified receipt, did they provide the effective date of your life insurance change?

No, he just said they received it and that was all that had been done. So basically yeah they got it but when they will get around to someone actually opening the letter and taking the required 5 minutes to read and apply the change is anyones guess, meanwhile i am stuck with paying a very large premium every month for insurance that i was not planning on having to pay. I am going to call Monday and IF i can get through maybe i can get some kind of resolution, hopefully without losing my temper.

Happy New Year, Ken! I'm glad you finally got some resolution... sorry it took longer than it should have, smh. How were you notified of the changes? Did OPM call you or mail an update?
