Disability Retirement

The federal government allows employees who are unable to work to retire under a disability retirement. It is in the best interest of both employees and the federal government for employees to remain gainfully employed in their current grade or pay level, as long as they can provide useful and efficient service without endangering themselves, others or government property.
Disability retirement should be the very last option and should be used only when attempts have been made to preserve an individual's employment, and those attempts have failed.

Order our Disability Retirement guide to educate yourself on the rules and regulations concerning disability retirement for federal employees.

Hello! Anyone have experience with FEHB termination?

I just received a letter from my local finance office informing of my debt of almost $4k for FEHB premiums paid by them on my behalf. This was not unexpected- I should say, the amount was not unexpected. What was unexpected was getting the debt letter itself! By my calculation I am due to receive over $20k in backpay once DR is finalized.

To make matters worse…I just got a letter from my FEHB provider (BCBS) letting me know my coverage will terminate on 31DEC2021.

At first I thought this termination letter was because I had just switched to GEHA FEHB provider a week earlier during open season and so I didn’t think anything of it. Now I’m thinking that my employer may have outright terminated my FEHB!

I have sent a letter to my local finance office in response to the debt letter asking for this sum to be collected from my back pay I am owed or if not, then a payment plan at $100/month (I also asked about the future of my FEHB). I’m not hopeful I will get a response let alone approval of my financial request.

Anyone had this happen? I’m on interim payments still. Isn’t it kinda crazy that they would cut off my FEHB considering my retirement isn’t finalized yet? Or better yet, the fact that I am going out due to disability!?!?!? Am I just over thinking this, or will I be without insurance come the new year? I need some serious surgery and currently I plan on having it Jan/Feb next year - I already met with the surgeon and everything! Im very nervous!

Any insight would be gratefully received!

My timeline:
FMLA start - 17Jul2020
DR application submitted - Sep2020
LWOP start - OCT2020
CSA letter received- 20MAY2021
Interim pay received- Sep2021 (included Jul &Aug 2021)
Debt letter from local office (FEHB premiums) received- 08NOV2021
FEHB termination letter from BCBS - 10NOV2021

That debt letter from your local finance office sounds legit. Did you pay your portion of the FEHB since around Oct of 20? If not it's most likely that. Changing plans during Interim status was a big mistake, might get worse from here. The notice of the upcoming termination letter from BCBS also sounds legit. I got one as well, told not to worry about it,and lost insurance for about a year

No I did not pay my portion. I’m certain the debt is legit… I just didn’t think it would be an issue until I got my retro. Looks like I’m in for quite a ride for the feds… thank you for your insight.
