GS12, single, 11 years into my Fed career. Got my tentative offer and accepted, moving from California to Kadena. Report date of Mid-March is what I'm seeing on my documents. Single/Divorced, so just me going over. I'm about halfway through the second round of onboard documents.

I'm being told I'll have to live off base, I hope to get some reassurance about finding a suitable apartment remotely, during Covid. I have contacted the housing office, but most likely due to the holidays haven't heard back yet. But, if anyone has done the same/similar move in this time frame, how did it go?

Also, an online search gave me reason to believe there is a bank nearby (or maybe on-base?), Community Bank, with an arrangement with Bank of America. I asked the HR person if they knew if this was still valid info, but they said they didn't know if this accurate or not. If anyone knows the answer, I'd appreciate it. I have an account with Navy Federal CU, so I could use that for my direct deposit, but would like to make the switch now as opposed to when I arrive and am dealing with numerous other things.

Yes, Community Bank is affiliated with Bank of America. There is a Pentagon FCU on Kadena and a Navy Federal on Camp Foster.

As an unaccompanied tour, you will have to live off base and you don’t get government furniture (that was the policy in 2016 unless it has changed). There are furnished apartments available, although I have seen Eagle Lodge and wouldn’t recommend it long term. The housing office should give you a list of available properties that have been inspected. I don’t know if they have it online, but the housing agencies will. We used My Housing when we were there and they were great.
