The Department of Homeland Security has a vital mission: to secure the nation from the many threats we face. This requires the dedication of more than 230,000 employees in jobs that range from aviation and border security to emergency response, from cybersecurity analyst to chemical facility inspector. [Their] duties are wide-ranging, but [their] goal is clear: keeping America safe. (source: www.dhs.gov)

Does this mean I've been selected and will be extended an offer? I really don't want to get my hopes up, but I'm having a hard time interpreting it any other way. It sounds like it to me, as well. Congrats! Has anyone had an interview for or heard anything from the Tampa office regarding these two AO postings? Thanks to everyone who is posting information and updates. This thread has been very helpful and informative.

Any insight on the AO job, lot of the reviews and posts are years old.
How many interviews do AO do in a day?
How is the morale and job satisfaction today?
Is the AO job more complex and difficult then ISO, since both top out at gs12?
How does travel or circuit rides work?

Did anyone apply to the recent graduate position that closed on October 26? Kind of interesting how they're asking for experience for a recent graduate.

For those who have been hired or considered for AO positions recently, with out going into great detail for obvious reasons, whats your take on the online/teams interview?
Also, for those that have been hired, how do you like it and what has been the biggest challenge?
From the JA, it sounds like 6weeks ISO trng, then 6 weeks AO training and 3 weeks online trng unless things have changed
THanks,

Hi,
I received a tentative offer for AO , I was wondering if a current AO can provide some information about the work load , when I interviewed the person conducting the interview told me that they were teleworking twice a week and reporting to the office three days a week . Is teleworking a possibility in this job ? I currently hold a good position life family balance but I don’t like my job I don’t want to stay in this job just because I have a good schedule . Also flex schedule is possible ? I currently can report to work between 6:30 to 9:30 I don’t have a fix schedule . Is that possible in this type of job ?. My current job can be stressful at times but there are some quiet days as well.

My current job can be stressful at times but there are some quiet days as well. Currently, according to my understanding, work schedules are very flexible because of the pandemic. Interviews are conducted via video or phone and most officers work from home for at least part of the week. How long that will last is an open question. If things go back to normal, or something that can pass for normal (conducting 16 in-person interviews each pay period), there sill still be flex time so that you can schedule your work day to begin within a two or three hour window, but once you choose you will stick to it. Pre-pandemic most offices offered an alternative work schedule (AWS), where, over the course of a two week pay period you would work eight 9 hour days and one 8 hour day and have one Friday or Monday off each pay period. That will probably survive since it was common for decades before the pandemic and never really caused any problems.

Anyone here work in the Boston office? I see openings almost monthly and read a scathing report on how poorly that office was run along with abuses that asylum seekers were treated which included actual former AOs
Appreciate the info-

For those who are looking for an asylum officer position but just can’t seem to make the list. This is essentially an assistant asylum officer position that should get you on the list with a year of experience at the GS 7 level. https://www.usajobs.gov/job/664350600
