I interviewed with the FAA for a engineering position about a month ago and I believe the interview went well. I haven't heard anything back yet and when I sent a email a few days ago, they said the process can take a while and have not selected anyone yet.

Does anyone have any idea how long the hiring process takes for a engineering position at the FAA. I guess I'm looking for examples on how long it took others to get a TOL after their interview.

Anyone have any experience similar to this?

This is my first government job I have ever applied to. Is it normal to not hear anything back for more than a month?

Yes, more than a month is perfectly normal, unfortunately. Though since you said in PM that it's got an exception to the freeze, the next thing to hear would either be a notification from USAJOBS saying you weren't selected, or hearing that from someone at the FAA. Either way, it's a slow process, especially if that hiring action under the freeze exception is getting extra bureaucratic oversight. Unfortunately repeated inquiries regarding the status are also unlikely to speed things along or get you an answer any sooner; feds hate to tell applicants "no" directly. They'd sooner put that into USAJOBS and let USAJOBS do the notifying. Good luck!!!

Trump placed a 90 day hiring freeze on all federal jobs since mid January (with a few exceptions). So the federal government is currently not allowed to hire. You will not hear back, positively or negatively, until this freeze is lifted. Good luck!

I don't believe this position is part of the hiring freeze because it was posted pre-hiring freeze and I was interviewed for it in the last week of February which is well into the hiring freeze. I was told I would hear something in a few weeks at the interview. I'm not sure how they define a few weeks lol

Looks like the hiring freeze was lifted today. I wonder how long it will take to resume hiring

Well, DOT is looking at a big cut and according to the wording of the new order, Agencies are going to have to take their proposed funding under Trump's plan into account when making manpower decisions in the short term, regardless of the freeze being lifted. Some agencies will probably fare better now than DOT and FTA, specifically, where my FO is from :( Time will tell. Maybe FAA will get some slack as thinks play out. All you can do is wait and see like the rest of us!

Just heard from DOT HR that now that the freeze is over, some positions are being submitted up for approval to continue through the hiring process. That will depend on the nature of the position, and how desperate they are to fill it.

That's good to hear, although I have already given up on the position. These jobs take months on average to get a response to. Adding on this freeze confusion, I wouldn't be surprised if they continued the process at the end of the year

Given up as in you'd no longer accept it? Yeah, it can be much slower than private industry, unfortunately. It seems like a lot of people are suddenly hearing one way or the other though so that seems like a good sign for you!

I would probably still accept if I got a response by next month but I don't think I would except if it was by the end of the year. I'm sure I would have another position by then.

Jeng,my experience with interviewing with FAA is old but I'll share. In 2010, I applied for a civil engineer position with FAA in Texas and made it to the second interview. I was excited when the HR specialist asked for my two most recent pay stubs (that used to be an indication of possible hire and to determine entry salary). However, a week later, I was told I did not get it. Everything was pretty quick so maybe the process has changed now to where it takes a while to make a hiring decision. The folks I interviewed with were all pleasant and very helpful.

There seems to be little info on the specifics of Congress's budget at this point (unless someone can point me in the direction of it), but in CNN's article this morning they said that it includes "increased funding for transit infrastructure grants". Also, this morning I heard that it didn't include penalties to sanctuary cities (which may be good for DOT folks in big cities). I'm not sure what exactly all this will mean for DOT and their hiring, but it sounds positive, especially considering that Trump had wanted to hit DOT with some pretty significant cuts in certain areas.

CNN article:

At the same time, the reuters article out this morning says that Trump will talk about a separate infrastructure bill in an interview airing tonight on CBS News. Apparently the plan for it will be out in 3 weeks, according to the article. So maybe Congress is funding current DOT programs with this budget and Trump's going to request additional money for DOT programs on top of that? That could be good news.

In my interview they did mention that Trump is planning on funding a bunch of infrastructure projects, that is why they were hiring even tho there was a freeze

DOT funding specifics can be found here:
http://appropriations.ho...evelopment_-_summary.pdf

Some modes have an "increase over enacted FY 2016 level" but a "decrease below President Obama's requested level". Since they're increases over the FY2016 level, hopefully that means hiring can move forward as planned! Or maybe I interpreted that incorrectly? It's possible that the difference between Congress's budget and Obama's requested levels are made up (or even exceeded?) with Trump's aforementioned separate infrastructure plan.

Right now there are a LOT of FAA positions, a couple Railway positions, and a couple Highway positions on USAJOBS. That could be good news for those modes. No jobs currently posted for Transit :(

I just touched base with a DOT HR rep and she told me that new guidance is due out tomorrow. She recommended calling on Thursday for an update on my specific situation.

I emailed my rep 2 weeks ago and I still haven't heard anything. Hopefully by tomorrow she can get back to me. This wait game is so brutal, some closure would be nice.
