Department of Defense

The Department of Defense (DoD) is charged with coordinating and supervising all agencies and functions of the government relating directly to national security and the United States armed forces. The mission of the Department of Defense is to provide the military forces needed to deter war and to protect the security of our country.

The Department of Defense is America's oldest and largest government agency -tracing its roots back to pre-Revolutionary times. Today, the Department is not only in charge of the military, but it also employs a civilian force of thousands. With over 1.4 million men and women on active duty, and 718,000 civilian personnel, DoD is the nation's largest employer. Another 1.1 million serve in the National Guard and Reserve forces. More than 2 million military retirees and their family members receive benefits.

Perhaps you are working for the DoD or interested in working for the DoD. Here is a forum to share your experience with the DoD.

So I've been looking for answers to this question and only have found some in there forum. In Feb I applied to an EHA position. The position wasn't like most I've seen where they are open for almost a year and need multiple vacancies in the the general series position. This one was 1 specific series with 1 vacancy and only open for 2 weeks. I've been looking out for this position since I applied for it a little over a year ago but didn't meet time in grade. So I applied as soon as I saw it again and was referred.

My question is, how long will it take to know if you are selected or not?

I've read that most EHAs just select without interviews, and the cert list is literally everyone that qualified for the position because there is no ranking. On the announcement it gave 90 days after release of the cert list to hire, and when I recently spoke to the HR Specialist, she said no one had been selected for the position. Now it's two weeks until that deadline, if weekends are included.

If a selection isn't made, will the cert expire and the job cancel or will they extend it?

If this was a regular announcement, I'd count it as a loss and just move on, but I've never applied to an EHA so I'm just curious as to how this works.

I see you have asked this same question in multiple forums. You may get an answer if you define what an EHA is.

From what you describe it sounds more like DHA or direct hire authority which doesn't use rankings which are used for positions with a critical need to fill. Never heard of EHA.

Sorry for the confusion everyone. And thank you SD Analyst for the recommendation. Yes, EHA is expedited hiring authority, which is a form of a direct hiring authority. The position is being filled under the expedited hiring authority for shortage category and/or critical need health care occupations.

But to your point nembamike, I have heard that no ranking are used to fill the position typically, but that's from me searching through the forum. I can't find an extremely similar situation to this to help me out while I'm searching.

Certs take as long as they take.

Worst thing you can do is worry about it.

My 3 Cardinal rules of government jobs.

1. Apply and forget, they will either call you or not. Do not call them, unless you know someone, then don't talk about knowing someone after you got the job ever.

2. Only apply for things you actually want. Because we are great migrators, civil servants like to move around. We move for family, promotions and because we always wanted to experience 5 months in the Mojave over 100 F or -20 and 95 days of dark in Barrow Alaska. Move for a reason don't move someplace you don't want to be unless it involves family, a promotion or adventure.

3. Make them tell you no. Not saying a PHD Wildlife Biologist will get a MD job. Just saying if you think you can do it, and advanced education or certifications are not required, then go get them Tiger!
