Internal Revenue Service

As a bureau of the Department of the Treasury and as one of the world's most efficient tax administrators, the IRS role is to help the large majority of compliant taxpayers with the tax law, while ensuring that the minority who are unwilling to comply pay their fair share. (Source: www.irs.gov)

Posting it for user mc13 who cannot post yet.

I cannot post in this forum for some reason. I am a new member.

I was wondering if you may post this for me?

I am located in the MD area and i was given a TO letter a few weeks ago. I did complete my fingerprinting and photo. I have been assigned to the New Carrollton office in MD. Any ideas on when i could be expected to start? My TO states i was accepted at a GS14. Just looking for some insight as to how long it took everyone else to get a firm offer letter. Also, just because we get a TO letter are the chances for us actually getting the job really really good?

thanks.

I have been seeing more new hires in WV. A couple that I spoke to that started this week (there were about 10) applied in June, almost 6 months ago.

Well, management did get excoriated in an audit report by TIGTA over screwing up the so-called hiring surge. Folks in AM are worried that our VoIP phones will crash ENTERPRISE-wide or if the database will finally die on us. These VoIP phones that we use for taking calls from taxpayers fit the stereotype of being the highest quality by the lowest bidder.

The Cisco phones, there is a terrible delay, seems like it is 2 seconds or more. We are waiting for an internal hire that got picked in Aug, you would think that would be quick being on the inside!

What happened with the hiring surge? Have to review TIGTA report if it is public.

I logged in today to see if anyone can confirm. I found out, though not officially so asking here, that Vets and other preferences are given to all candidates regardless of if they applied after the cutoff dates for some postings. For some positions, there was a two to four week cutoff period for first consideration and I was under the impression that the subset of applicants from that pool would be taken, rated, preferences applied, offered and if positions not filled then move on to more. Can anyone confirm if what I heard is true or what I thought it was? If its the latter then a lot of people who applied sooner would be out of luck since many of these positions are still open so they will continue to get preference candidates.

General caveat, not judging any preferences but simply trying to make sense of it all for IRS jobs.

Does anyone know if you have to have IT experience or IT-related/math-related education to qualify as GS-7 for the IT Specialist jobs being announced by the IRS lately?

The announcements for IT Specialist jobs aren't very clear at GS-7 level when defining Superior Academic Achievement -- they just say a Bachelor's Degree without specifying a major and then define the Superior Academic Achievement provisions. Every other time education is mentioned in the GS-5, GS-7, and GS-9 quals in these announcements, the requirements list specific majors or coursework in certain types of subject matter. The exception is GS-7 via Superior Academic Achievement.

I would be applying as an internal, but I've seen this ambiguity on both internal and external announcements. I know there's a difference between being basically qualified to apply and actually having a good chance of being hired, but I first want to know if I could be qualified enough to apply.

I asked HR on one IT Specialist announcement once, and they said I could apply for that one but it differs by announcement. I'm not even sure that was the right answer. I didn't end up applying to that one because the job was in DC, so didn't test it out to find out. I'm hoping someone who is actually working the IT jobs right now knows for sure. Thanks.

Happy New Years!...It has started off great for me! Today I got a TO for a 2210 position I applied for in July. I'll put my timeline and opinion below because for me personally I really appreciate when members put their timelines.

7/11/18 - Applied
7/12/18 - 1st cut-off. I consider this important because for the 2210 March positions I applied for, I contacted HR and they politely told me that since I applied AFTER the first cut-off my application was not yet reviewed and would not be until the 1st cut-offs were processed. And IF there were any openings left, they may send additional referrals to the HO. This could be dependent upon the specific grade/positions I had applied for.
7/26/18 - Received an email from IRS about status changed to "Reviewed".
...Nothing
...More of Nothing
11/30/18 - Received an email from USAJOBS(about 1am) about status change. In Careerconnector status changed to "Referred to Selecting Official".
12/18/18 - Received an email from USAJOBS(about 1am) about status change; however, no status changed(at least on my end), I'm thinking I was selected but it was not viewable on my end yet.
1/3/19 - Received an email from USAJOBS (about 1am) about status change. In Careerconnector status changed to "You've been selected"! Onboarding tab viewable but no "task" issued yet.
1/3/19 - Received an email from careerconnector to complete onboarding task about 10am.

I am waiting on the next steps but I wanted to share my experience thus far. If you have specific questions, please feel free PM me. Good Luck!

Good news!

Most of the IRS is closed do to the shutdown, I have been waiting at home wondering when it will be over. I guess HR must be still working? Or maybe the robots are in control. :)
