Hi Ed....

I’m planning to retire in November this year at 56 years of age and 35 years service...

4 Years Active duty Military (Time bought back)
7 Years Military Technician (WG-8)
24 Years Postal Service (Letter Carrier)

How many years count towards Special Supplement?

31 years of FERS service will be used in the calculation of your Retirement Annuity Supplement. The four years of bought-back military service will not be included in the calculation.

Thank you for the response…

I had previously ordered the computer generated annuity estimate, which failed to properly include the 7 years Military Technician time in the FERS Special Supplement.

When I called Shared Services to ask them to look at and correct if necessary this error, they assured me “that only the final years with the final Agency are computed”.

I knew this was misinformation. So that is when I went to you for confirmation.

My follow-up questions for you are…

1. Is there someone else I can call to try and correct this prior to retirement?

Or

2. Will this most likely just sort itself out in the end?

You should immediately contact OPM at retire@opm.gov and provide OPM's Retirement Office the information you provided here in the forum. Ask that office what years will be included in the calculation of your FERS annuity supplement. They should say 31 years. But do not assume things will "sort themselves out in the end".

I would add that you need to make sure your Service Computation Date is set correctly. They may not have included your 7 years as a WG for another Agency, and are only showing Postal time in your SCD. It is imperative you get this straight before you retire. If possible, get a copy of your SF-50s from the WG job/Agency showing the time you spent and your SCD then. Those old SF-50s should be in your OPF. Many HR's are not very good about getting the SCD computed correctly, if there is more than 1 Agency and/or breaks in service involved.

Thank you for your input into this forum. But remember that the SCD for retirement does include the 4 years of bought back military service that is not included in the computation of the FERS annuity supplement.
