Haha well its obvious that its not a mission critical role, I suppose. Definitely mission support related.

The weird part is they gave me a CJO in 2018, based off of a degree I didn't have at the time, and wasn't suppose to receive until 2020. Granted, my then/now current standings still left me eligible for the position, but I have always wondered why it was done this way, and if they do intend to wait until I graduate with that degree.

I am interested to see how it plays out, but I will wait as long as necessary if that means getting a chance at this opportunity.

What could be reasons for a background investigation to take up almost a year?

There really isn't a straight forward answer to this. It comes down to so many factors, it really could be anything. Funding, position, candidates history, candidates travel, etc etc.

I will say, I submitted my SF86 in December, and it wasn't finished being processed until March. And that was without any revisions needed. I had been told back then that it would take 3-5 months, so being on the 3 months sides of things was quick. Sometimes this can take longer, and definitely if revisions are needed, from what I have seen.

Have you followed up with your recruiter since March?

I have contacted both my recruiters every month since March, but all they kept saying was that I'm still actively processing and that if they hear anything they will contact me.

It could also be if you live in a larger city, the case load the BI have could be high. Like BatDog said, there are SO many factors at play.

2/19: They actually scheduled the math test even though I'd been pestering them for 3 months
2/19: Take math test
3/19: Got CJO (at a pretty undervalued salary based on their own brackets and my credentials and experience, but told I can't negotiate until later), asked for e-qip forms. Three or four times between 3/19 and 5/19 they send e-qip back asking for trivial changes, which take about two hours to do each time
5/19: Told my forms were accepted and my investigation has started
5/19: Met an investigator in person and he talked to me + some of my friends and coworkers
7/19: Told I'm in suitability checking, polygraph and psych schedule for 8/19
8/19: Psych exams, failed polygraph, had "normal" job interviews with the team I'd be working with if I take the job, psychologist asked for some medical records which I got emailed to him by the end of the month. Team I'd be working with said they expect to finish their committee and voting on whether they want me or not in about 2-2.5 months.
9/19: Passed polygraph. Polygraph examiner said usually it's about 2 months after this to finish the process on the security side. No idea if that's accurate or not, he didn't seem like he was totally confident in that estimate.
Late 10/19: Told that a batch of candidates in my department will be decided on starting on a certain day in 11/19. No idea if that means that's when I'll actually hear about the results, though.

Hello all, I figured I’d share my timeline. I really appreciate seeing posts from other members regarding their timelines.

12/18 Interview
2/19 CJO
2/19 Submitted forms/paperwork
4/19 Employer contacted
6/19 Psych/poly
6/19 2nd poly (was not told I passed, unsure of results)
7/19 Received suitability email
10/19 Received call on behalf of my recruiter stating I am still active in processing

Side note - I have been in touch with my recruiter several times via email since my 2nd poly and have been told I’m still processing with security

9/20/2018 - Submitted application
4/10/2019 - Interview
5/28/2019 - Prescreen phone call
6/4/2019 - Transcripts and resume sent
6/11/2019 - CJO
6/28/2019 - SF-86 submitted
9/13/2019 - BI Interview
9/16-9/20 - Neighbors, friends, and professors contacted by investigators

My BI called yesterday and said investigation is complete and being sent to review. If I don't hear anything in two weeks, then the investigation portion has been completed and sent to the next step. Waiting to be scheduled for Poly & Psych. After waiting 8 months to hear back from my application, the last 3 months have felt pretty quick to go from SF-86 to the investigation portion being (almost/hopefully) complete. The waiting game continues! I appreciate everyone's timeline updates!

Update:

10/19 - Scheduled for poly and psych for the end of the month

11/19 - Psych pass and second poly scheduled for mid November

Been lurking for a bit, so here's my timeline so far -

9/19 - attended NSA event at my school and applied; realized that I forgot to reference the tech recruiter who told me to apply and asked for advice, IC careers told me to reapply, did so; invited to do a HireVue interview
10/19 - interview completed
10/19 - CJO extended; SF-86 requested; contacted by technical recruiter (different one) to chat on the phone; SF-86 submitted; chat on phone with tech recruiter; security team reaches out and asks for additional information regarding two points on my SF-86; forms resubmitted (within a day or two); recruiter informs me to expect a 6 to 9 month time period on clearance
11/19 - another recruiter lets me know that the security team has confirmed that they've received my paperwork and the scheduling team will reach out to me to schedule my suitability processing (Poly/Psych/Discussions with various managers)

I put in for the computer science professional entry level position, if that makes any difference. Haven't traveled out of the country in the last 14 or 15 years, no felonies/misdemeanors, only lived in one place for the past 10 years. What'll make things interesting for me is that I've got a few foreign contacts I know through online writing, all from friendly nations though. We shall see. Settling in for the long wait.

I can imagine your process being quick as it seemed to be going through quickly; until I read about the foreign contacts. Just make sure you don't tell the foreign contacts about your position and application.

Yeah, didn't say a word about where or what. They're all from Canada, Australia, Sweden, and GB, so, we'll see I guess. I don't graduate until August 2020, so, I'm just hoping that's enough time. The second tech recruiter and a friend of mine who used to have clearance doesn't seem to think they'll be an issue since they're all online friends from allied nations.

Without getting into too much detail of my own processing, it appears I may have to add another 6 months to my timeline, in order to wait for my graduation in May. So I too am interested to see how both our timelines play out with pending graduations.

Best of luck, my dude. I'm dealing with the fun of university administration pulling the rug out from under me and trying to say I have to redo my graduation checklist because they may or may not offer the senior project in the summer. Hooooraaaaaaaaaaaah lol

I've had about as much luck with my college in the past years, so it wouldn't surprise me for them to cancel my final classes due to crazy reasons.

Hopefully thats not the case for either of us! Good luck to you as well.

Reading everyone’s timelines. When you go for the psych assessment, do they call it that? I have not been brought in for one, just a poly (passed)

Well... I got a call this morning and was told that they had to cancel my poly/psych for next week because they're "overbooked." I asked about rescheduling, and she said that the rest of 2019 is already booked up and that the 2020 calendar hasn't been released yet for scheduling. I don't know what all that means for processing times, except that it adds another month and a half + to mine, but I figured I'd share the info I had with y'all.

Well, that bites. Granted, I figured I wouldn't get the call until 2020, but I had that foolish optimism lol. Hopefully they're able to get you in sometime in January.

Update: Just heard from my recruiter who said that my processing has been "paused" until the organization reevaluates their staffing needs for 2020. I'm not sure how that lines up with what the other lady told me lol, but it definitely leaves me feeling discouraged!

Hopefully they're not actually booked up and are able to get you in!
