Thanks in advance for your advice, and thanks for this helpful thread! They will NOT negotiate unless you have federal service at a higher level. You have (or rather will have imminently) a PhD, and you are applying for a job that starts at around $25/hour....? You know most PhD holders can secure employment paying around $50/hour, right? Those student loans are going to eat you alive in a few years with compound interest with what you'll be able to pay at $25/hour.... How long until you delete this comment, Poplou? I won't respond further and feed the conversation, but you do delete sometimes. Edited by user Tuesday, March 24, 2020 2:48:19 PM(UTC)

I won't respond further and feed the conversation, but you do delete sometimes. I just point out obvious truths that people don't like, yet are on point and extremely accurate. That's why I do so well in the IC. The average PhD grad walks out with 100K+ in student loans. At an average 7% interest rate, that is $7000/year in interest without even factoring in compound interest. That means you need to pay $600/month minimum just to keep the interest at bay and not even touch the principle. The average GS-9 is going to have an exceptionally hard time keeping up with a 100k+ student loan, and it's absolutely idiotic for a PhD grad to be making $25/hour when they should be able to secure employment making $50/hour. But I mean, you know, it's just math. It's not like losing control of a 100K+ student loan with compounding interest would have life destroying consequences or anything, right? I mean, defaulting on federal student loans, which would cause a person to instantly lose their security clearance, and thus their IC job, wouldn't be a big deal now, would it? <shrug>. What do I know. You assume I have debt. My graduate coursework was fully funded, and I didn't take out loans for undergrad. |

I didn't get any results, but I know my previous employer, current employer, University staff/professors, and my friends have all been contacted. It was a bit surprising because I thought I bombed the poly. I wasn't outright called a liar like someone else here, but the polygrapher said I had "red flags". As far as poly results, I'd say no news is good news. You may already be in background and just not know it. |

Not sure about July, though. At least that is my understanding - take a look at the last page on the SA 2020 thread for chatter on that. Edited by user Tuesday, March 31, 2020 4:26:29 PM(UTC)

How is everyone? Safe and healthy? Has anyone had application date changes or other movement?
What about George from the March class? Are there any expectations for when classes may start back up?
Just thought I'd bring the thread back up and check in. :) Hope everyone is doing ok!

I figured that would be the case. I guess on the up side you already know what to expect when you get back.

Hey all. Bouncing over here from the SA thread since ours has been pretty slow and I'm bored lol.
Saw someone ask about application date changes. I'm in background and had a date change last week. A few weeks before that date change my AC said in the system I was showing as "pending ajudication". This was my first date change since I entered background last May. Could mean nothing, but at least it's something! |

I've actually followed the SA thread for a while - appreciate your update! I'd love to know how my background is going, but I am intent on letting things roll along with the expectation that someone will contact me when necessary, or I will see an update in the portal (I try to check regularly). I'm sure there will be a point when my curiosity gets the best of me and I'll contact my AC, but I'll wait until I've been in background for 6+ months before I do that. I'm trying not to be a nuisance! 😆

FYI: A couple of folks over in the SA 2020 thread have reported an invite/scheduling for a June 10 class. ETA: I just want to clarify that the invite likely does not signify a definitive return date since that is the end-date of the VA stay-at-home order. No doubt there is a lot of work to be done in order to get classes running again. If anyone gets updates regarding a return to Quantico, feel free to update us! I just emailed my contact who sent my original class invitation regarding the scheduling of the next IA class date. She said it has not been scheduled yet, so maybe SA has, but not IA. |
