Call Medicare at 1-800-MEDICARE and they can answer your questions.
We pay FICA Insurance our entire working life for the most part, which is Social Security (I was CSRS, so I paid that instead) PLUS Medicare insurance.
The number changed over the years, but I think it was around 7.45% or 7.65% of salary.
If so, that gives you Medicare Part A for free (since you've already paid it)
Medicare pt B pays what Medicare pt A DOES NOT pay, and that's what you are thinking. I think that's $144/month for 2020.
Either they take it out of your SS check, or bill you quarterly, or you can pay it monthly electronically via your Bank checking account.
Part C is Medicare Advantage plans which are all over the map....dozens of them, each promising something more that what Medicare gives you.
Part D is prescription drugs.
I'm not sure how disability works, but you may be required to go on Medicare when you turn 65 which is free. Pt B would be ~ $144 / month additional.
Some people skip that and retain FEHB, and there are folks like me that pay for Medicare pt B AND keep FEHB, so it's a bit expensive, especially coz I'm affected by IRMAA.
IRMAA is a function of Medicare pt B and charges you more than $144/month, depending on your income. Currently, my Medicare pt B is $202.40 instead of the $144.
So, I pay Medicare pt B at $202.40, plus ~ $256 for BCBS and $42 for Delta dental insurance.
I hope that helps and doesn't confuse you, but in the end...good luck with your choices.
