Internal Revenue Service

As a bureau of the Department of the Treasury and as one of the world's most efficient tax administrators, the IRS role is to help the large majority of compliant taxpayers with the tax law, while ensuring that the minority who are unwilling to comply pay their fair share. (Source: www.irs.gov)

This forum will allow you to share and ask job-related questions about this bureau. This is NOT the place to ask tax questions.

Has anyone received a rating from the assessment? I assume I passed since my classification changed to referred, but I never received an official rating.

I never received any of that on my external apps submitted this year. But they also are doing things different this year. Last year was a 12 month roster that was open forever with different cut off dates, this year they just had an annoucement open for a limited time period, so it would make sense that they are doing things differently.

Pretty sure if you got a referral, then you did well enough on the assessment. It doesn't necessarily mean that you will get an interview, but a referral is always good news; or at least it isn't bad news.

Yes, last year, the referrals came after interview. This year, they are sending referrals before interview which is what I have seen to be more common across the government.

Thanks. Now i need to figure out what accounting and tax topics to study for the interview. It’s been a while since I did accounting or tax work and a really long time since I was an RA (left the job in 2005).

Out of curiosity, and maybe off-topic, but what did you leave the RA job for, and why are you looking to go back? I was contacted for an interview today too, will be next week.

I left the IRS and became a Special Agent (Federal law enforcement) with another gov agency. I left that job last year because I got sick of the crazy schedule and travel and wanted to get back to a normal life. I now work in the private sector with a job I really like.

I applied for the IRS job because it isn’t too often they do a mass hiring. I didn’t pass the interview last year for the big hire they did. I wouldn’t mind getting back into the government as I can start contributing to my TSP again, get back all my sick leave i abandoned, and the pay is actually quite good when you hit a 12 or 13.

My status in USAJOBS.gov still says reviewed. Is it safe to say I'm probably out? I've tried emailing the philidelpha office and looked for a contact phone number, but haven't had any luck. Just seems unlikely I'll have a chance when everyone is getting interviews now

I don't think that is necessarily true. I just think that some HR areas may be slower in getting their referral lists completed. I'm sure there are quite a few HR personnel in Philadelphia involved in this whole process. It could be that your app has been referred but your status may not be updated yet. Don't count yourself out. I see, from other responses that external people are being interviewed, but I know one of my areas is not working on external interviews yet. I say that to say that different areas are at different stages with this whole hiring process. Until you receive an email saying you were not selected, you are still in the running for a position.

Thanks, I appreciate the insight! I know nothing makes sense with this process, but just yesterday I received an email I was rated category B and won't be referred for a different irs job I applied for, one that I took the assessment 2 months after this one. But I'll just try to be patient!

Not necessarily.

They may not be setting up interviews for the POD you applied for yet. You may not have. Eat qualified but highly qualified and they’ll interview you later.

Or you out of luck.

But working for the IRS I would say that anything can happen

It's been like 5 months since I applied, it would be nice to at least know one way or the other

If you’re going to work for the government you might as well get use to “hurry up and wait” now
