As a bureau of the Department of the Treasury and as one of the world's most efficient tax administrators, the IRS role is to help the large majority of compliant taxpayers with the tax law, while ensuring that the minority who are unwilling to comply pay their fair share. (Source: www.irs.gov)

External Link: https://www.usajobs.gov/...ob/ViewDetails/593769100

I received an email from a higher up that about 1700 external applications were received before the announcement was taken down and it was taken down because they only wanted to limit you to apply to 5 PODS rather than no limit so they reposted it with the limit. Also, the person said this will not have any effect on the hiring timeline. Good luck everyone!

My application has been resubmitted. Just a reminder that the posting closes on March 8.

I went to reapply to the external announcement after the notification it got reposted, but found my city removed. Originally the post cited 5 openings in my city, but it's not a choice in the new post so I'm passing this time. Bummer, but best of luck to everyone else applying or reapplying.

I am in Arizona and received the same email to reapply, but when I went on there were no openings offered in my State. Good Luck to all!

Hi all,

First time posting here. Took ages to be able to register and then get approved to post. Anyway, I recently applied to the RO opening. I saw some of the previous posts by former ROs and appreciate their input about the job itself. I was hoping some of you all could give some more details and insight into what the job entails, such as the day-to-day activities, how dynamic it is, etc. Also, can someone explain the difference between an RO and IRA as it relates to job functions? (not referring to the required experience/education)

Thanks.

Hello, the difference between an RO and an RA is that the RA conducts the tax audit and issues the tax assessment, the RO is the one who collects the assessment. Basically RO are the tax collectors.

Hi all! I applied to quite a few positions. The RO, the RA, and the TS positions. I’m hoping that I land on at least 1. I used to work for the IRS, but had to accept another job due to my family’s relocation, and so now I work for the VA. I like it, but would rather work for the IRS, as I enjoy working with the public and meeting folks face-to-face.

Good luck to everybody, and let’s keep each other updated! ;)

I suggest reading the job announcements if you want to know what the two jobs do. Here is a link with a description on what RO's do. https://www.jobs.irs.gov...0pay%20the%20tax%20bill. I will add though that this job (RO) is not just about collecting taxes. It's a civil enforcement job. You need to know how to conduct investigations. This entails finding information taxpayers don't willingly give you, finding taxpayers in general, analyze financial information (granted not on the scale of an RA) and many other tasks. You need to be comfortable with people being rude to you in person etc and be good at time management. These tasks are just a little of what you actually do on the job. Just do research on it online and read the job announcements and you will learn what you need to know to get hired if you are fortunate enough to be interviewed! Good luck!

A day in the life of an RO?

I’d say that depends on what day it is.

And if the world is on fire or not.

The last year it’s been telephonic tax and return collections.

But even in normal times. You work your cases. And I work case every day in every stage of development.

Every so often if you get to know people you’ll get a call from DOJ or Chief Counsel to serve a supeouna or work with PALS on a sale.

I use to go to the field a lot for tax payer visits and assets searches. But COVID hit and that ended since last March.

But really no day is the same.

There’s always a fire to put out in your inventory. A meeting that you don’t want to do. Etc.

But I’ll say the RO job is a great job. I love it.

After the training year you are pretty much left alone to do your work.

Honestly I’ll go 2 or 3 weeks without anything but email contact with my GM.

I worked from home prior to COVID and will stay working at home once everyone else goes back.

Also, I don’t care what anyone says. I know the Public perception of the IRS and how the public hates us.

I don’t care. It’s a great place to work. Has its typical weirdness of any Govt agency. But it’s a great place to work.

On the plus side. Last year I won best costume at Halloween party.

I put on my G-man suit and put ‘IRS Agent ‘ on a name sticker on my suit. Everyone said ‘scariest costume ever’.

One other thing. Off work, the only people that know I work for the IRS are close friends and family. When someone asks me what I do I say ‘I’m an accountant for the Treasury Dept’. Saves uncomfortable looks and the ‘I better be nice to you’.

Only time I put where I work is on credit applications because they demand it.

Just a guess but I’d say as long as you can count to 12 then you’re good.

Any 4 year degree is fine for an RO.

My degrees are forensic accounting and a masters in taxation.

But I know two coworkers with info tech degrees. Several with teaching degrees.

In training you’ll be given all the information you need to be successful.

The Revenue Officer announcement for externals has been canceled but they will repost it soon.

This is the email that we're receiving:

"Thank you for your interest in employment with the Internal Revenue Service. We received your application for employment; however, at this time we wish to inform you that the external recruitment for this position has been canceled.

This announcement will be re-posted at which time you will need to reapply for consideration, please look for the following announcement number coming to USAJOBS.gov on Monday, March 01, 2021: 21BRK-SBX0323-1169-07T09."

Sometimes this happens when higher-ups review the announcement after published and find there is something wrong with the language or if they decide to change something and it can't just be amended.

It will set us back 1 week but that's not that much in federal government timeframes. They will probably make up for it so the hiring/training for externals doesn't lag much behind or is on par with the internal hiring. From my previous experience, both receive the same training on the same dates.

If anything changes in the hiring process, it might just be that internals start a pay period before externals but the externals will definitely be in the same training class. As far as hiring is concerned, internals are looked at first in these announcements before externals but with the amount of spots available, there definitely will be external spots available after internal hiring. Good luck!

federalgovtjobseeker, Thanks for your insightful information and to the others who've also contributed on this thread. From my past experience what you're saying is 100% what I remember.

I have a couple of questions for you or the other guys here who've been ROs for a while. As I've said before, I used to be an RO and I'm returning to the IRS after a few years in another agency. I know there might've been changes due to the time that has elapsed since I've been there or because of Covid, maybe RO training will be virtual, as I've seen with other agencies that have been hiring/training in this Covid affected period.

I hope that because the hiring process has just started and it will take a few months, plus Covid seems to be on its way down, we can get in-classroom training like the old days by the time they hire new ROs. I remember it was great training with the RO's helping us in person and relating their war stories.

Questions:

1) Have you heard anything about the RO training being virtual/staying virtual or continuing with the previous practice of in person training at one location accommodating all new RO's from different cities for classroom instruction?

2) Do you know or remember how many weeks of training for the initial RO training phase did the most recent trainees have as to your
knowledge?

*I remember I spent 4 or 5 weeks in another city/stayed at a hotel for RO training phase 1 and met RO's from different cities.
I also remember that there were 3 other phases within the 1st year in which we were also sent to other locations for in person
training.

Thanks for your responses/information/feedback.

Nick
