Finally can post my timeline here, as it has been a journey.

My background: New to government service, non-vet, have never held a clearance, coming from 12+ years in private sector (not including experience from HS & college)

Note that I was able to obtain step 10 as my incoming step, via a SQM + paystubs from my current job. The role itself is fairly specialized and aligns well with my experience and skillset, so least to say I am excited to serve, and be involved with a mission that aligns both personally & professionally.
