@tryingfed, did your orders last year say "those over 250 miles are required to fly?" Just wondering if maybe they got more strict.

I'm waiting to hear back on the official word that I can drive.

There was no mention of what kind of duffel to bring... No mention of the type of athletic shoes.... So I'm bringing what I've got.

Oh, and field trips? Yes! I'm ready to get there!

Very easy to book the flight with cwt. Followed instructions and it went like clockwork. Arrive at Dulles at 11:22am 14JUL14. JCPenney has the shoes and good deals on suits. Luggage on sale at TJ Max. Sears has sales on dress shirts and ties. All brand new items ran me under $700 including new luggage.

I ordered them from JCpenney's just in case they didn't fit right I could take them back to an actual store. I used a coupon code online for 15% off!

cwt was very easy to deal with for sure! She couldn't get me to Reagan until 12:30 though.

Going to get a new garment bag style suitcase today!

ME too...so I've messaged them, but no reply to my questions or anything yet. I see there's construction going on near quantico and google maps says it's taking 1.5 hours to get there. Therefore, if I were to schedule a shuttle it's going to be tight to get there by three. I planned on scheduling it for 1 just to make sure I had time to get to it. 1 plus 1.5 hours puts it at 2:30. Trust me you're not the only one worried about time!

Reference to the questions concerning the 250 mile restriction on driving. I read the cable. It is a bit confusing because it says if you live more than 250 miles away you have to fly yet then says if you elect to drive there is parking. First off the Academy is restricting all classes to the 250 mile limit. The reason - too many classes in session and not enough parking. There is a current basic agent class and there will be one starting the same day as the Diversion class. There is also some Intell and Chemist classes and some in-service classes. The Academy told both the current agent class and the one starting with you guys the same thing. If you are traveling more the 250 miles you must fly. Now if you want to take the chance and drive you must also understand there will be consequences. What those consequences are, I have no idea.

Now to address you arrival time. I realize some of you are having trouble scheduling your flights and shuttles to allow you to arrive by 3 PM. I suggest 3 things. First there is an e-mail address on the cable. I suggest you send them an e-mail advising them you can't make it by 3Pm because of airline and shuttle schedules. Keep a copy of that e-mail. Secondly - there is a phone number on the cable - 703-632-5000. I suggest you call that number and ask to speak to the Diversion Training Unit. If you have to leave a voice mail message. You might want to record it on your cell if you have to leave a message. If you do happen to get a person make sure you get their name and title. If need be ask to speak to the BDI 45 Class Coordinator or one of the DI Instructors. MAKE SURE YOU GET THE NAMES OF THE PEOPLE YOU TALK TO. Explain your situation. They will provide you guidance. You need to make sure you notify someone that you will be late. The third and final suggestion I have - is to notify your counselor. Sometime during the week before your report day (that will be the week of July 7th) your counselor will (should) give you a call. MAKE SURE YOU TELL HIM/HER about your travel situation and that you may be late. The worst thing you can do is not let someone know as soon as possible. If you tell them in advance then they can't write you up. But if they don't know and you show up 2 hours late and try to say you couldn't get an earlier flight or shuttle then you pay the price. Especially since you knew before hand there was an issue. Again, make sure you get the names of the people you talk to and write down the date and time you spoke with them. You need to be proactive in contacting the Academy staff and you need to CYA. If enough people call with travel problems the Academy staff might be able to work something out with the shuttle services to add additional vans. But if they don't know there isn't anything they can do to try and help. Let someone know ASAP. Remember folks - only you can prevent an ass chewing. CYA.

Good luck to all and travel safe.

@gearup... From what I'm reading in the cable, it is ok to fly in early as long as EVERY expense is mine to incur. Correct?

I would like to fly in on Friday. Stay te weekend and take the shuttle Monday to the q. I understand all meals lodging etc would be my expense. I haven't gotten a response to the emails I've sent. Thoughts?

Thanks gear up...no worries already emailed them about getting there late just in case. If it wasn't for the construction on 95 wouldn't be a problem!

Hoosire_gal,

If you read the cable you'll see that in paragraph 9 it says "travel in excess of the authorized travel days (one day coming and one day returning) is allowable; however, additional lodging or M&IE expenses incurred for extra travel day(s) is the responsibility of the traveler and is not reimbursable. Travel days are Monday, July 14, 2014, and either Friday, October 3, 2014, following graduation, or Saturday, October 4, 2014."

So you are covered if you want to fly out on Friday and spend the weekend. You are allowed "travel in excess of the authorized travel days." You just can't claim any meals or hotel charges. For those that don't know M & IE means Meals and Incidental Expenses. Incidental Expenses can include dry cleaning, tips, taxi fares, etc.

Just make sure you show up on time on Monday.

I have a DAFRE shuttle scheduled for 1:15pm from Reagan if anyone wants to tag along.

Of course if my flight's late you might be up a creek if you're not on the same plane as me ;)

I called back to book an earlier flight if available. Found out why they didn't book the earlier one was because they are non refundable for that time from my location. However, now I have plenty of time. I will get there at RR at 8am now. Didn't want to be late due to the construction going on.

@Gearup or Trying fed. Does the base have a car rental place? Considering only 4-5 people can drive. I know fort knox here has a couple on base I think hertz and enterprise. Just wondering in case we need to escape ;). This will also probably be our only option to visit DC...unless amtrak runs through quantico.

I just came from Penny's and they had a ton. It's like 1 1/4" but that was the smallest size they had for men.

Will we be issued a laptop at the academy? The cable says no iPads, laptops, video games, DVDs, etc...

I just concerned about being able to talk to my family, Skype, etc... Anyone with insight?

@ cruch ..... yes you will be issued laptops. You can use those laptops for just about anything you want; pay bills, skype, research etc.... and OBVIOUSLY NOT PORN. They will also tell you that you CANNOT view this forum as well!

DO NOT take your laptops or IPADS or any video games.

@ ccode ... The base does have car rental (enterprise) on the main side of base at the PX, or you can go out the back gate and they have some in that town. Actually AMTRAK does run through quantico but you do not want that. You want to take the Metro, which is up the interstate. Do not worry about car rental until 3 weeks in.

***Because parking is limited and they do not want people to drive (according to the cable) the class coordinator might allow you to take the academy van to the other side of base to go to the PX and barber shop. DO NOT go anywhere else unless approved to go! Ask about the van but WAIT to ask AFTER you pass the 1st test.

With or without construction, the DC area always has traffic. A fellow classmate in the last class said every time he was on the interstate he would get stopped in traffic and that is without construction.

ALL ... I agree with GearUp. Make sure you tell someone you will be late. The academy knows there are circumstances where people will be late.

Sorry for those that were expecting to drive but now wont be. But ask your counselor when they call you if you are still allowed. They might have a few exceptions.

There are ALOT of students at the academy now and next weekend with both a Agent class and a DI class starting up.
