DHS

The Department of Homeland Security has a vital mission: to secure the nation from the many threats we face. This requires the dedication of more than 230,000 employees in jobs that range from aviation and border security to emergency response, from cybersecurity analyst to chemical facility inspector. [Their] duties are wide-ranging, but [their] goal is clear: keeping America safe. (source: www.dhs.gov)

I may be getting a job in D.C. as a mission
support specialist as a GS-09 with promotion potential to GS-13. If I do my job
well and get along with my supervisors would I advance to 11, 12 and 13 every year?
If not would it be because someone is sitting in that slot? Are there any other
obstacles that could hinder my promotion? I really don't want to move to D.C. but if it gets me a quick climb up the ladder I will tuff it out.

If I go to a job interview would they tell me if I will be competing against others to get promotions? I'm sure I will out perform anyone there but I'm worried about waiting inline because peers with more time in are in my way.

If is is a job with promotion potential then you will not have to compete again for each promotion. Whether you will advance each year is up to you and more importantly your supervisors opinion of your work.

You will however find out that thinking of your fellow employees as dirtbags will definately impede your progress.

I am sorry, but I do not have the time to respond to private messages. I will not respond to them.

lol. I didn't really mean all of them. Just hate being in a situation where co workers are promoted or treated better because they have been there longer and not by how they perform. Its the way of the world though I guess.
