When it comes to five-day mail, Congress refuses to deliver. Two congressional panels late last month declined to make the decision to trim mail delivery from six to five days per week—giving the Postal Regulatory Commission time to complete its ongoing review of a U.S. Postal Service plan to initiate five-day delivery.

The panels approved two Fiscal Year 2011 spending bills—one in the Senate and one in the House—that would allow the Postal Service to continue to provide mail delivery six days per week.

The Senate Appropriations Committee voted 18-12 to approve a spending bill for Fiscal Year 2011 that included a measure to continue six-day delivery. The House Financial Services and General Government Subcommittee approved language in a similar measure on a voice vote.
