I received the email of qualified but not amongst the best qualified. Congrats to those that did receive notification of referral. Any words of encouragement would be helpful. I have been applying for jobs for over close to 4 years. Some referrals here and there. I have worked my tail off in school to graduate with Honors in undergrad, graduating with BSBA 3.59 (Cum Laude) International Honor Society for business and completed my graduate school with a 4.0. I have been with the federal government for 15 years (since I graduated) highschool, and have never been so frustrated with trying to move up within the public sector. I have even contemplated leaving only to get a better income. Any words of encouragement would be helpful .... meanwhile I will continue to apply every week as I have been doing for the last 3 in a half 4 years. I thought maybe with this assessment it gave me a glimmer of hope .... so many times I have spoken with HR on positions and found out that I was knocked out by people with veterans preference. (Nothing against Veterans) but I have been told this recently within a year 6 times after I was referred. Frustrating to say the least..... Good luck on job hunting guys.... cause sometimes it feels like I'm applying to a black hole trying to move to another agency.

Well, this might not count as encouragement, because I hope it doesn't happen, but....IF we have another national financial crisis.....there will be a lot of hiring for jobs like this one.

Our economy goes in cycles and about every 7 or 8 years there is a big shift in the economy. In 2000 it was the dot-com bubble burst followed by the stock market decline after 9/11/2001. Then in 2008 the housing bubble burst, which caused a bunch of bank failures in 2009 and 2010. The result of the bank failures was FDIC hired thousands of term employees to manage the banks in 2009 (I was one of them). And then in 2010, Congress passed the Dodd-Frank Act, which created the CFPB, who has slowly been hiring examiners like this announcement that we're discussing now.

Our economy is currently being held together with chewing gum and bailing wire--the current power structure is hoping to hold it together until after the next election, when it will be "someone else's problem to deal with". This is not a political statement against one party or other---they are both just kicking the can down the road. Remember, we were sailing along smoothly in 2008 and just a few months before the election---the whole thing came crashing down. Housing crisis, stock market, Lehman Brothers, etc... And that's how we got the bailouts, TARP, etc. It's been 7 or 8 years since then, and so we are due for another big whammy to happen. I hope and pray it doesn't but we all know eventually something big will happen. And that's when federal hiring will ramp up again.

Funny how government hiring works----the worse things get, the more they hire. FEMA saw a wave of hiring after Hurricane Katrina. And if, God forbid, we get into a war with ISIS.....

I'm worried about what happens to CFPB when Dodd-Frank is repealed? Are all CFPB employees told to go home?

I have decided to continue to apply for positions and also start shadowing some professors at my alumni to get some teaching experience. Best of luck to everyone job hunting.

Just completed a survey I got by email asking what region I would work in. After I completed, it said I would get a call about interview within 30 days. There is some movement.

But when you applied, didn't it ask you to select a region? Did your choice of regions change?

There was a deadline so maybe it's to reduce the number of interviews.

I'm not sure why they asked this again, other than you had to verify that was the region you wanted to work in and agree if you didn't live in the region to move at your own expense. So, maybe the initial screening didn't look at regions. Who knows with the government.

Read back in this thread, is it still normal to expect 6+ months to pass before you hear anything from CFPB for attorney positions? New to fed apps but that seems... extended.

6 months or so is about average. They don't get in a hurry, it seems.

I've been sitting on apps from SEC over 6 months so I can't complain about CFPB in particular, but damn if that isn't crazy to me in private practice.

Fed gov't works on a completely different set of rules than private industry. I'm not saying it's right, that's just the way it is. For example, at IRS---service levels for answering phone calls is 35%. Name me ANY private business that would stay in business if they only answered the phone 35% of the time, or for only 35% of the customers.

I mean, it is what it is, but I'm thinking about a system that holds onto a resume for a year, then makes a hiring decision fully a YEAR later (which the federal system already acknowledges is huge through its system of grading)? So much changes for applicants in that time. Even putting aside my private industry expectations, it just seems odd.

Nobody here is disagreeing with you that it doesn't make sense. But we've learned, if you want to get hired, you have to play by their rules, whether you agree or not.
