Not sure where to ask but this forum seemed appropriate.

Organization is going through a major downsizing and starting the RIF process.  During the recent budget issues and potential furloughs we have an employee whose position was designated in writing as "essential" and told to work if there was a furlough.

Recently, less than 2 months later, the same employee was notified that his billet will be "RIFed".  This seems to be a contradiction and grounds for a challenge. Billets offered up for RIF are by nature defined as not needed or not critical to continued operation of the organization -- not essential.

What are your thoughts on this?

Don't see a problem with this.

The budget freeze and  downsizing/RIF is comparing apples to oranges.
