Department of Defense

The Department of Defense (DoD) is charged with coordinating and supervising all agencies and functions of the government relating directly to national security and the United States armed forces. The mission of the Department of Defense is to provide the military forces needed to deter war and to protect the security of our country.

The Department of Defense is America's oldest and largest government agency -tracing its roots back to pre-Revolutionary times. Today, the Department is not only in charge of the military, but it also employs a civilian force of thousands. With over 1.4 million men and women on active duty, and 718,000 civilian personnel, DoD is the nation's largest employer. Another 1.1 million serve in the National Guard and Reserve forces. More than 2 million military retirees and their family members receive benefits.

Perhaps you are working for the DoD or interested in working for the DoD. Here is a forum to share your experience with the DoD.

Aside from the memo by CPOL, has DOD in general raised it's freeze/pause?

I did see mention of DCAA...but what about other components?

I work for a Navy higher headquarters and it has been made crystal clear that we (including all of our subordinates) will not be hiring for new positions for at least several years. We are allowed to fill existing positions if somebody leaves, but very few people are going anywhere anytime soon. We already cut positions last year through attrition (without backfilling) and we are about to start another round of reductions in positions. The VSIPs were just handed in this week. It was the second time in less than a year that we filled those out. For the first time in many years, our HR SES person mentioned the possiblity of RIFs (although it was described as improbable) this week. I have to imagine that similar scenarios are playing out across DOD.

For what it's worth,  I received a TO in late February 2011 and am awaiting my FO when the secret clearance is completed.   This is for DCMA.

That's odd, my co-worker starts a new job with the Navy next week. It's an IT job.
