Disability Retirement

The federal government allows employees who are unable to work to retire under a disability retirement. It is in the best interest of both employees and the federal government for employees to remain gainfully employed in their current grade or pay level, as long as they can provide useful and efficient service without endangering themselves, others or government property.
Disability retirement should be the very last option and should be used only when attempts have been made to preserve an individual's employment, and those attempts have failed.

Order our Disability Retirement guide to educate yourself on the rules and regulations concerning disability retirement for federal employees.

Ok, approved for both, got back pay from OPM< got back pay from SS.  Sent in copy of award letter to OPM.  Saving back pay from SS to payback to OPM ...correct?  I still can't figure out how much I am going to get 40 percent here, 40 percent there???  I don't know what OPM's final number is.  I am so confused... How long does it take for OPM and SS to meet and get this figured out?  I also have to go in and do my kids for ss, how long does that take?  Any ideas?

Well I can tell you as far as OPM goes you wont know your finale figures until you get finalized and thats taking a year and longer, in my case April will be 2 years for me on interim payments... I am LEO, the USPS might be quicker on paperwork maybe...
As far as SS I have no idea, I wasnt approved but didnt fight it cuz I figured I could go back to work. I havent been able to yet...

Okay.. I have been on interim payments for nearly 10 months. March 1 2012 will make one year. I was approved rather quickly for SSDI and OPM disability without legal representation . Still waiting to be finalized.. Oh.... . I had been with only one(1) agency(United States Postal Service) for 14 years so I don't know why finalization is taking so long .Certifying records for only one agency should not take this long. I hope you're ready for the long ride. Good luck

I totally agree, I do not know what its taking so long, although I have not worked since Nov 2008.... so I figured my paperwork would take longer because I waited almost the full yr before I filed for DR... and was approved within 5 months from start to finish.... just taking forever on the final paperwork... was LEO for 16 years some agency, same state... so its not like my paperwork is scattered all over... so what gives? Not a clue, I just know most of us are in for the long haul for sure... Last time I called they said its been taking a year to get finalized and then she says, OH... I see youre way over that... and that was probably 5 months ago... I figure my paperworks gotta be coming up soon enough! ( I HOPE) Just sit and wait for my turn... Might be Dead be4 its all said and done LOL

Definitely short staffed.  Does anyone remember when the IRS was short staffed...workers were putting income tax forms up in the ceilings.

After taking the advice of some seasoned FEDSOUPers on the retirement forum about the finalization process and why some are not finalized after lengthy periods of time. I decided to send an email to OPM Retire.
This was after I was at wits end after losing health coverage because my husband informed me that he had been terminated. He had picked up the family health insurance after my BCBS was terminated(>365 days LWOP). I sent the email that day. It was 2.5 weeks ago. I got the automatic reply back email from OPM.
Well  about @ 08:49 AM today my phone rang. The voice on the other end asked for me by my full name. I was puzzled. She said she was calling from OPM and that she was processing my claim to be finalized. She also said she had my letter that I mailed in right after my OPM disability retirement approva(03/27/2011)l. I wasmaking a written request to have my FEHB/FEGLI reinstated. She then stated that my email had been forwarded to her as well as cc'ed to JOHN Berry.  That's how she got my full name. Then she said that she has all that is needed to process my file BUT....My heart then kicks into panic mode. She said the only thing that was needed was how/when I want my retroactive date for my FEHB to begin. She gives me three(3) options:1) the date when my FEHB was cancelled 2)Today or 3) January 2012. She said retro payments for the reinstated FEHB would be based on whatever date I selected. Good to know that they will not charge for services that were not rendered. She said I see you had BCBS plan 105 and that  I would hear from BCBS  w/in 3 weeks. She also informed me that FEGLI was never cancelled. So no need for reinstatement for that . She apologized for the lengthy wait and that she was going to finish processing my file. She seemed very polite and professional. Well my husband was informed that he was retained by the company but that his boss was terminated so the health insurance is still there. That's a plus. So now I'm curious as to what happens next.

I was approved in early August 2011 and finalized by October ! I only received 2 interim checks ! Why was I finalized so quick? Doesn't make sense But wait we are talking federal agencies here. Now I am wondering if they did it right ! Good luck to the rest of you, hope it happens soon.

My DR Application pkg was received by OPM in April 2011. I was approved on May 31, 2011. My first interim payment was received the end of June 2011. I was finalized the end of October 2011. I read somewhere that more staff was hired and trained, but who knows. My SSDI application was received in July 2010 and I was approved by an ALJ at the Hearing Level in February 2012. Best of luck to everyone!

Hey Lefty! I am still waitin to be finalized..got my approval in Sept..it is now in audit stage..they tell me(specialist) that I should be  by possibly April payment! I sure hope so..considering I am not sure what my high three turned out to be after waiting 6 plus months waiting to be approved..I am thinking I should have much more monthly because if I calculate correctly it turns out my high three added 1200.00 to my higher amount! Keeping my fingers crossed!

So, I received a letter from OPM the other day stating that my DR payment will be lowered to the 40 percent amount effective the 1 APR 2012 payment.  The new gross payment amount is a little over $500 less than the 60 percent payment.  At almost the same time I received a letter from OPM asking about the status of my Social Security Disability Claim.  This is my SSDI timeline from the ALJ hearing date:

2/27/12:ALJ Hearing (approved on the record at the hearing)
3/2/12: Decision written
3/9/12: Decision letter received via mail (fully favorable)
3/10/12: Direct deposit of retroactive payments

Good luck everyone!

sicntired, when you get a chance.  I would appreciate an update to your situation.  I believe my situation is much like yours.  However, I'm about four months further behind.  Thanks ahead for your time.

Thanks to Oktoots below is an example that may help in your Calculations

OPM AND SSDI CALCULATIONS

40% AND 40% ( 2ND Year of Disability Retirement)

Note: SSDI Amount stays the same

Example:

            OPM = $1,700.00

            SSDI = $1,800.00 – Fed Taxes

To Calculate Offset:

            60% X SSDI = Offset

            60% X $1,800.00 = $1,080 which = Offset

To Calculate OPM – Offset:

            OPM – Offset = OPM MONTHLY ANNUITY @ 40%

            $1,700.00 - $1,080 = $620.00

The second Year you should receive 2 checks per month.

            SSDI CHECK = $1,800.00

            OPM CHECK =    $620.00

   MONTHLY TOTAL = $2,420.00

Note: OPM check will equal above or the amount that you would have earned if you retired immediately and not on disability which OPM calculates, which could be higher. So you will receive the higher of the two from OPM.

I don't know if you've gotten your insurance reinstated or not, but I also went through unbelievable frustration with the same thing. I was told MULTIPLE TIMES by multiple people that they were faxing BCN the info they needed to reinstate me. This went on since Dec. 2011.....but no one seemed to be doing what they needed to do, because BCN still was showing me as "terminated". After writing a nasty letter to OPM, and then contacting my congressman, I was just reinstated today, May 21, 2012. Good luck...I can't believe how frustrating this was! OPM continued to deduct my health premiums, despite not being covered, each month. I really wish there was some type of "class action" thing we could do for something like this. Totally unnecessary stress, which does not help, especially in a medical retirement situation. I hope your situation is resolved soooon.
