A very reliable source has informed me that teams are being assembled
to work on the details of a Forest Service buyout.  The same reliable source has heard the date March 31st being thrown around.

I
hadn't heard anything in so long that I was losing hope.  This cheered me up a bit, and, I hope that it does the same for you. Smile

Thanks pissfir!  I'm too far away from retirement to take advantage but I know of at least one colleague that has postponed his retirement waiting for the buyout.  Given the budget outlook buyouts are probably the least expensive way for the Forest Service to cut labor costs.  A Reduction in Force (RIF) with all the bump and retreat rights is much more expensive to implement.

If the government is going to downsize, I expect many buyouts in various agencies during the next few years.

Buyout could take months to implement.  If the Forrest Service has buyout authority, they could start making offers next month.

If they started the effort in September, a 31 March offer may be possible.
