I was wondering if anyone knows the comparison between veterans preference points and civilians with masters degrees? I am to understand there is a 5 to 10 point addition if you are a veteran, and was wondering how a veteran with a bachelors degree would stock up against a non-veteran with a masters degree? Which one would be considered more important in the eyes of the agency?

a vet who served in the position when military, with a job specific masters, out ranks. Big smile

honestly, it's not the degree. or the vet status. it's your experience. really and truly. even when the folks on this board act silly.

goto the OPM page. Look up the job series/family and for the grade level in question it will tell you how important the masters is. Also look at the job announcement. They sometimes let you use a masters only if it directly relates. so no, a masters in general won't help you outshine. and if the vet is some yahoo, then he won't outshine you either.

simonsays is exactly right. A PFC who skated by, received a general discharge and barely attained his BA with a 2.5 is not going to compare to that stud who finished his MA in Finance at 23. However, will that same 23 year old have difficulty going against the double below the zone promoted Special Forces Major who perhaps only has a BA in say, Arabic Studies? Hard to say. Both would likely be seen as very competive, but you can't really say one is "better" than the other because the FBI needs different people at different times with specific skill sets.

Bottom line, crystal ball type questions are just that - trying to look into a crystal ball.
