I need any help I can get, I have basically been told that I will be offered a position with the State Department as an Information Management System specialist (IMS), and I am currently a GS-2210-12, with great prospects of a GS-2210-13 in the very near future.
The query I have is would it be in my best interest to go with the State Department or stay with my current organization? Please give as detailed response as you can, would be especially helpful if you spoke from personal experience, thank you.

Confused I can't help much being in a similar situation as a GS13step10 and possibly going to a FP05.  IMO to get a 13 level as an IMS in the DoS would most likely take awhile (at least two years), depending on what they bring you in as, but as a 12 step 1 with a pay match you could come in as a FP5 step 7 or 8, if your lucky.  The next adminstrative increase is not for 18 months, at which point you might match a GS13 step1.  It's a tough call, in fact I'm not sure what my decsision will be, if and when I get the call.  If you think you may be in line for 13 within the next few months I would put a lot of thought into joining the FS, could you defer at all until you got a promotion?  Good luck in your decision.

Well time has passed and I was able to join as an FS05 with the appropriate step to recieve a pay bumb of $500 lol, not bad though. It was primarily due to my experience and education that got me that close. IMO if you are already a GS13 joining State would lose you money, now if you are motivated by service and travel then come on down we could use a well rounded manager in our ranks. Besides if you apply yourself promotions here at State are based on merit rather than moving from job to job or hoping your position gets a favorable re-write.

LOL!  Do you actually believe that promotions at DOS are based on Merit?  That is funny.  I know you just started with the 125th Specialist Class but once you get out to an Embassy you will see there are people who have been promoted because of who they know.  I know of ISO's and IPO's who can barely set up their Outlook account.
DOS is a great place but there are a lot of duds who are hanging out waiting on retirement.

That will always be true but at least you have a fighting chance to attempt to advance your career vs GS where you have to move position, state, and sometimes even country before you can be promoted, at the higher levels (GS-14,GS-15) it is always about who you know and less about what you have accomplished you know.

Did that job for 4 years. While I loved being overseas, the incompetence level of my supervisor's made me hate it. And yes, they got promoted. My opinion, give it a minimum of 2 tours and then decide if it's best for you. Can't beat living overseas for free. I saved a ton of money and traveled all over for vacation or TDY. Essentially as a first tour specialist, make sure you get decent marks on your yearly evaluation and you pretty much guaranteed for the admin promotion.

Just saw this and for those who are curious this is a great comparable scale...

    GS-15                 =        FS/FP-01
    GS-14                 =        FS/FP-02
    GS-13                 =        FS/FP-03
    GS-12 (step 4 and up)   =        FS/FP-03
    GS-12 (step 3 and below)=        FS/FP-04
    GS-11                 =        FS/FP-04
    GS-10                 =        FS/FP-05
    GS-9                 =        FS/FP-05
    GS-8                 =        FS/FP-06
    GS-7                 =        FS/FP-07
