Thank you for your informative answers; I have found them to be helpful. I am within 3 years of retiremnt, and as I read the information available; there is little benefit to older workers from the Roth IRA. If I am wrong, please provide an example of how this could be a useful tool for us.

The Roth IRA is useful to all employees, including those employees close to retirement. Among the advantages of the Roth IRA for those close to retirement is the fact that after retirement, those employees who have contributed to the Roth TSP (which starts sometime this spring) will be able to rollover their Roth TSP accounts to a Roth IRA. In so doing, an employee/annuitant will be able to generate tax-free growth and not required to withdraw the Roth IRA at any time, passing on tax-free income to their heirs.
