Disability Retirement

The federal government allows employees who are unable to work to retire under a disability retirement. It is in the best interest of both employees and the federal government for employees to remain gainfully employed in their current grade or pay level, as long as they can provide useful and efficient service without endangering themselves, others or government property.
Disability retirement should be the very last option and should be used only when attempts have been made to preserve an individual's employment, and those attempts have failed.

Order our Disability Retirement guide to educate yourself on the rules and regulations concerning disability retirement for federal employees.

I got my approval letter today!  I'm so happy.  Here's my timeline:

early November 2011 - Submitted my package to HR
early December 2011 - HR forwards to OPM and I get a letter with a case number
24 Feb 2012 - case worker assigned
9 Apr 2012 - approval letter sent

Now on to the next step... determining my last work day!

Awesome, congrats!  I was just approved a few weeks ago and received the first installment of my back pay.  The last work day determination went pretty smoothly (I was USPS) and I received payment about 8 days later!!!!  Feels like the weight of the world is off of my shoulders.  I wish the finalization process was quicker......but for now, I'm happy.  Good for you!

congratulations. its a big weight lifted getting that appoval letter. now hopfully the rest will go quicker for you.

gratz to pug crazy for recieving interum/back pay so quickly.

I personally still waitting sence jan for interum / back pay.

my HR said they sent off my last day of pay 4 days after approval mid jan. now OPM says they didnt get it in there system till feb 26th. and they tell me diffrent offices/untis my claim goes to like i work there and should know what these units/office function are. how do i know? no clue what technical support or some unit 7 is soppossed to mean? Now in april they say they will have a supervisor call me or e-mail me in 5 days to let me know whats going on. week later stil nothing no callback no email.

I just wish i knew what they still had to do. as far as i know they should just transmite my interum pay to my bank. how hard is that really.

sorry dont mean to rain on your parade or hi-jack your thread. just venting, good luck to you.

I am in the process of applying for DR and was wonder if I should combine my military disability with it?  I am still working and wanted to work up to my approval.  Do not want to do anything that would prevent me from qualifying.

no I didn't have an attorney.  I just made sure the doctor's statement showed that the tasks in my job description could not be done because of the aspects of my disability.  I also made my statement follow the same criteria.

My doctor's statement was only 1 1/2 pages long, and I had no lab work submitted.
