If I retire under FERS with 15-years of service will I be able to apply my unused sick leave as credible service toward my retirement annuity, or do I need to have 20-years service in order to receive credit for my unused sick leave?

No matter how many years of creditable service a FERS-covered employees has, unused sick leave will be used in the calculation of the FERS annuity. Unused sick leave cannot be used for retirement eligibility purposes, however. Also, if a FERS-covered employee retires before 1/1/2014 only 50 percent of the unused sick leave at the time of retirement will be used in the calculation of the FERS annuity whereas if the employee retires after 12/31/2013, all of the unused sick leave at the time of retirement will be used in the computation of the FERS annuity.
