I just got a 7 day for not delivering all my Red Plums in one day.  I brought back 3 swings to avoid running over, but I didn't ask permission.  The very next week I was told to leave the same amount of R. P. b/c they where out of order.  Is that ridiculous or what.  Can't wait to get my union time.

What was the charge in the letter?

Failure to follow instructions.
At the morning service talk the sup. said,  "Deliver all the Advos today."

That's why!  He gave an instruction and you failed to obey it!

Yep, thats why.
If I would have called in to ask what to do, they would have said to bring them back.  This has happened before, and thats what the've told me.

I've seen it many many times from many many supervisors. If they explicitly tell the entire collective of carriers in the morning that a certain objective must be carried out and followed through, you can damn well be certain they're gonna try and stick ya if you don't do as they ask later on that day.

But that does not alter the fact that you disobeyed WILLINGLY  a direct instruction.  You do not have that right unless it creates a safety hazard for you.  If you knew that why did you not call?

I thought discipline was supposed to be progressive. Straight to a suspension?

Depends on the offense.  It will probably be reduced.

You should have called in the PM for updated instructions when you couldn't make it.

Valassis bought out Advo a few years ago and changed the name of the advertising mailer to Red Plum.

I used to call collect, then when the supervisor started crying about me not calling I would tell him that I called but whoever answered the phone didn't accept the charges. From then on they gave me change every morning to call if I needed to.

Your defense should focus on your misunderstanding of the requirement to deliver all Red Plums regardless of the amount of time necessary. You obviously thought that 5 o'clock or 6 o'clock or last dispatch or whatever the flavor of the month is at your office was as important that day as it always has been. It will not happen again. You will deliver them no matter how long it takes. (This sarcasm should probably be handled by your steward) Since you had previously been given instructions upon calling to curtail them, you thought it completely reasonable to apply those instructions to this case too. You didn't need a suspension to learn that lesson. A job discussion would have had the corrective effect. Make sure your steward understands that.

Does the P.O. pay for your cell phone? NOPE. So you do not need to call, and if your like me I never answer the call. They can come find me on the route(s) if they need/have question.  I also have all known numbers sent straight to voice mail with an android app.

Then you're making it easier for the discipline to stick. And of course I can find access to a phone, I'm not retarded
