The first meeting of the Air Force BRAC / Restructure is next week.

A congressionally created commission assessing the Air Force’s structure to determine if and how it should be modified to best fill current and future mission requirements will hold its first public hearing June 4.

The National Commission on the Structure of the Air Force was mandated by the fiscal 2013 defense authorization bill as a response to the Air Force’s February 2013 proposal to curtail its force structure, with the most significant impacts falling on Air National Guard personnel and aircraft. The Air Force proposed cutting 3,900 active-duty personnel, 5,100 Guard members and 900 reservists.

The DOD appropriation bill that was signed in Dec mandated that there would a 1 to 1 cut in personnel. For every military slot eliminated a civilian slot had to go as well.

I expect most downsizing will be done with normal attritions, buyouts, and retirement. I guess base closure is possible.

The problem with a BRAC is it costs money up front. Packing, Moving and clean up. Then 10 years down the road you see a return.

Can anyone tell me the time frame a base has to close once it's been targeted on a BRAC list? Is there a magic number (years wise) they have to close the doors? How soon after they have been targeted do people actually start getting released or transferred?

Theres no set time frame. Some bases were closed fast. Some long. Depends upon whats on the base.

And some were on the list then two years later taken off the list.

Cannon AFB, New Mexico.

It depends. Most have a year or so. I think the max is 5 years.
