February 2017 - applied
December 2017 - proctored test
February 2018 - panel interview
May 2018 - emailed DEA DI recruiting and confirmed "successfully completed" interview process
May 2018 - drug questionnaire received and returned
June 2018 - conditional offer received and accepted
October 2018 - medical forms completed and returned
December 2018 - security forms completed and returned

Once the eQIP has been sent in, when do you generally get notification of them starting background, background investigator interview, and if you're selected for accelerated processing? Still a lot of time left in the process but it's starting to feel like "the call" could be in 2019.

Second question, a lot has happened since 2017 and now employment-wise. Is there a step where experience can be evaluated to see if a higher entry grade is applicable? The work I do now is relevant to DI and I would hope it would potentially be taken into consideration.

Hey!
From what I’ve experienced, the BI’s are already starting to look into your file well before they actually contact you for a meeting.
I sent in my E-Qip I think in August? It’s all a blur now.. and my parents got contacted just last Monday and I wasn’t given any heads up that they started.
As for the grade/step increase I’m not qualified to answer, though I’ve heard they may consider step increase to match your GS pay now. But that’s not for sure and not 100% on those details. Good luck!

Will a prolonged shutdown impede the hiring process? I see the Diversion unit is excepted, what about the officials involved in hiring?

My BI called me today to ask a question, so they must not be included in the shutdown.

Hi Qwerkie,

I apologize for not using the quote function (I'm not quite clear on how it works on here), but my understanding is that the DI classes are 12 weeks each and start on new pay periods. So it should be April 1st. Good luck!

For what it's worth, I'm on the same timeline you are, although I haven't heard anything from whoever is doing my BI.

Also, a general question for anyone on here: What are the odds of getting assigned to Philadelphia or Camden (South Jersey?) I heard Newark is supposedly always hiring, but nothing about the Delaware Valley.

Thank you!!! I appreciate the information! Best of luck to you and hopefully you hear something very soon. I just got the call from the BI today.

Hope you get the location that you want!! Fingers crossed for a preference sheet that has where I want on it, New England (preferably Providence).

They are going to go over everything you filled out in your paperwork. Make sure it is all correct and ask for any clarification so forth.

I also applied for that same one and took the online assessment and the DI people said I passed it when I called them to find out when they would send out invites for the proctored exam, still haven't received an invite yet though.

For those of us who applied in Feb 2017, we didn't have proctored exams until Nov 2017. So hang tight guys. It can be a long wait.

General question, but I saw previously that senior DIs (GS-13s who have been in grade a while) can occasionally get overseas postings. What is the best way to work towards that? I would think it involves showing you're a go-getter and putting yourself out there as a known and reliable pair of hands, but is there anything else? And might London be an option?

Thanks!

Airedale260,

Sorry but London is not an option at this time. Current overseas assignments you could possible apply for include:

Bogota, Columbia
Vienna, Austria
Brussels, Belgium
Bangkok, Thailand
Beijing, China
Hong Kong
New Delhi, India
Mexico City, Mexico

You have to be a GS-13 and have your stuff together because they are one DI assignments. There are 1811s assigned but the lone DI assigned to those slots has to be at the top of his/her game as they represent the Diversion side of the agency. So its everything you described and then some. Good investigative skills, tact, maturity, independence, ability to work alone as well as on a team, ability to make decisions, outstanding performance evals, etc., etc.

Thanks for the info, GearUp! It makes sense; like you said, you're representing Diversion as a whole and solo at that.
