It's been a long road but I found out I was approved by the hiring panel. Just waiting on my preference sheet which they said they are still working on the available locations. I wasn't expecting the sheet any time soon since the next class isn't until February but nice to know I am lined up for it.

For anyone new on here, I am a 2017 applicant.

Thanks for the update on your timeline. Any idea how many 2017 applicants are left to get into the February 2020 Academy?

I have no idea. I think on the forum there is only a handful of us. I know a few who were originally told wait listed last class ended up getting called so if anything there's fewer then expected when last class was finally filled.

I'm also a 2017. The last I've heard was that I was awaiting the panel. Glad to hear you're moving forward Luckydevil.

Goodluck and thanks! Hope yours gets approved soon. Mine was awaiting the panel back in July just to give you a reference.

Thanks all. I’m a June 2018 applicant hoping to make it in this time around. I’m waiting on panel approval as well.

Thank you for the update, LuckyDevil. I'm just curious, when you say you "found out" you were approved by the hiring panel, did you receive an email, or did you contact HR on your own to inquire about your status? Thank you, and congrats on the progress!

Thanks! I contacted them on my own. There was an accidental oversight by OPM on my background which caused a delay. Thankfully it was caught in an audit by IA and they immediately got it done. But because of that I've made a habit of checking in with HR every few months to check on my file and make sure everything was moving along properly. So with my latest inquiry they informed me I was approved and good to go now.

Couple of questions fellas thanks in advance!

Anyone know more less what the average age is for DI new hires at the academy?

Also about how big are the classes? 30?

And lastly do they still give the top student the choice to pick the office they want to start at?

I don't know about average age, but I believe class size is usually 50. I am not positive though.

If I remember from previous post, locations are assigned prior to training. I believe at the final offer and they are all based on the DEA'S needs.

Yes but they are asking does top student still get to pick wherever. In the past whoever graduated top of the class was allowed to pick the office they wanted (ie switch from the location they were assigned). I do not know if they still do that though.

Average age: Can't say. I don't have that info. But we have people of all ages (20s - 60s), go through the Academy.

Class size: They shoot for 50 which is max. But they've had classes as small as 25.

Top student: Yes. The top student gets his/her choice of assignment. All candidates known their assignment prior to going to the Academy and the assignments are made based on the needs of the DEA. The top student can keep the original assignment or pick another office. And it doesn't matter if the office he/she picks is already at staffing level or overstaffed. That's one more reason you shouldn't move or commit to anything like a lease, purchase or sale of home until after you graduate.

Good luck! I didn't make the final cut, unfortunately (made it through the process but wasn't among the most competitive). Maybe try again next announcement.

Still, I passed everything else, so...good? Also, does anyone know if this means I've been approved to hold a clearance in the future, or will I need to go through everything with the BI again?

Well, looks like us 2018 group members should be seeing movement very soon. I just got an email for the Drug Questionnaire and to confirm mailing address.

Progress forward is still progress in the right direction!

It would have been nice, but hopefully things work out. I still have a couple more things moving, so we'll see.
