Furlough Freelancing
The government shutdown means unexpected free time, and uncertain paychecks. Feds in the IT community and elsewhere boast valuable skills, so FederalDaily and its sister publications -- Defense Systems, FCW, GCN and Washington Technology -- have set up this forum to connect would-be freelancers with those in search of temporary talent. Post your skills or link to your LinkedIn profile, and put this unexpected downtime to good use! (Note: to furloughed contractors: Your ability to moonlight may vary, but this forum is open to you as well!)

So just getting a 20-year pin for service, one should be feeling pushed out of federal service? Does not a person have to be 59.5 years in age too - to apply to retire from federal service without any penalties?

You have posted this in the "Furlough Freelancing" forum, which most people don't look at now since we are not being furloughed. You would get more replies if you post in the correct forum. Here is the link to Retirement Planning: https://forum.federalsou...t.aspx?g=topics&f=24Yes, there is an age and years of service requirement for Federal retirement. If you are FERS, full retirement is 30 years and at least age 57. There is an option for "MRA+10," age 57 and 10 years of service. However, your pension is reduced 5 percent for every year you are under age 62. Federal retirement is not like military retirement.
