Hello everyone! I went through all the required steps for the ag specialist job and now I have been "referred to scheduling". I applied to the Northwest region of the US. I also called the scheduling and training unit and they said the next academy class would most likely not be until 2017.

My question is when should I be getting the phone call offering me a specific place in the NW region. Any suggestion for NW ports?

Hey Smary,

2016 applicant did my VBT last week. Spoke to a supervisor we'll get EOD info when scheduled for training. I don't know about specific ports but it was mentioned that NW, NE, and Midwest have few vacancies and you probably won't have too many options. Did you apply during the late Feb job posting? Congrats on being referred to scheduling I'm still waiting for drug test, BI.

Hey everyone, I am also a 2016 applicant. I was referred to selection August 3rd of this year. I applied to the Northeast, hoping for Philadelphia. Because I am trying to go from military to federal work, I also gave a call to the scheduling team and it is indeed seems like Spring 2017 will be the first class but I do have more info.

Thanks to a Reservist at my unit who is an Agricultural Specialist, I got more information to everything that is happening. They are revamping the school we have to attend to integrate the Agricultural Specialists more into CBP. The position used to be in the USDA and migrated over to CBP in 2003. Since then, there has been a divide between the Ag Specialists and the rest of CBP, one that they are trying to finally close.

This means that when we go we will have to spend sometime at FLETC learning what the rest of CBP does before we start our school. They are also trying to move the school from the USDA APHIS school in Fredrick, MD to FLETA in Georgia. Don't know if that will happen by the time we go to school but the FLETC part is definitely happening because even current Ag Specialist have to eventually go.

Envihon, Thanks for the additional information.

By the looks of post from earlier years, i too think we will have to wait until Spring 2017 for an Academy class... which if you're correct, FLETC would mean that our training would be extended then the require 10+ weeks that are required for Aggies.

Yeah the time at FLETC is why they are trying to move the school since the closest FLETC would be Charleston, SC. It should only be a couple additional weeks of training, nothing crazy but we will see. We won't really know until next year but I will keep you guys posted on anything I hear. I usually have weekend duty when he usually has to drill for his Reservist weekend so next month I will probably talk to him again. So now we just get to hurry up and wait.

If we have to go to FLETC, we will have physical requirements like CBP officers?

Hello everyone, I've heard that what it's going to happened is that we are going to take the regular training as Ag specialist at Maryland, Frederick and then going for 2 additional weeks for another training in Georgia. I don't think that we need to take a physical test or something related, if so, it should be described at the job description before you apply. Don't be stress about it, just have the patience for the calling, and then when we get the final offer we can ask questions about it.

They posted a new announcement for the AS position. They mention this:

You will start your training at the Professional Development Center located in Frederick, MD, for USDA training. Upon successful completion of this training, you will transition to the Field Operations Academy located at the Federal Law Enforcement Training Center (FLETC) in Glynco, GA, for additional training. Successful completion of both training environments is required.

Yeah, I wouldn't sweat it about the FLETC training in Georgia. From my experience working with CBP in joint ops, the officers and Ag specialists act almost independently from each other to the point that it doesn't even seem like they are apart of the same organization. The training in FLETC is geared towards fixing that by helping the Ag Specialists integrate more with CBP.

Hi all. I just applied to 16-2 which was open last week. I am curious about the medical exam. The medical standards listed in the announcement sound pretty vague, like they could potentially use any condition to disqualify a person. Is it a pretty tough exam? Is there specific criteria? Can a person with a condition or past condition still qualify for the job? Thanks in advance.

There are medical factors they can disqualify you on depending on the severity. They have this fact sheet about the medical exam: https://www.cbp.gov/site...uments/mee_agsfaqs_3.pdf

It's Smary, still waiting on the call. I've been referred to scheduling EOD since the end of June. Just trying to be patient. Thanks for all the great info, especially about training.

Anyone else apply to the NW region?

Hey Smary.. Been EOD since the end of July,I applied for Puerto Rico/Virgin Islands. Patience is definitely a virtue, my guess is we wont receive a call until the end of the year.

This is so frustrating. Right now I can't even plan vacations with the family in case I receive the call to report :-(

*Referred to scheduling since July 06

Yeah, based off the other processing of last year's group, sounds like we won't get a call until Decemeber sometime. The wait is pretty killer, I went and extended my contract again for the military so I can be in until Spring so hopefully I can transition smoothly. And I am worried about my vacation next year because depending when we start, I will need to ask off for it despite being brand new and that's if I get into the first class offered.

I applied to the Northeast region and from what I am hearing, if I don't get Philly, there are plenty of spots in Newark, NJ. They are hurting for people there.
