Social Security Administration

The Social Security Administration (SSA) is an independent agency of the United States federal government that administers Social Security, a social insurance program consisting of retirement, disability, and survivors' benefits. To qualify for these benefits, most American workers pay Social Security taxes on their earnings; future benefits are based on the employees' contributions. (Source: Wikipedia)

Hello Group, has anyone applied for the Benefit Authorizer position in Chicago? I've had my interview and of course fingerprints. Fingerprints just seem to be an automatic preliminary requirement. Also any idea when they are looking to hire and when classes start? My interviewers said they did not know. Thanks

I had my interview beginning of July, no fingerprints as I'm already a federal employee. My interviewers also said they didn't know when classes would start, one lady told me I may not hear anything until August. This is also for the Chicago location. So, I'll come back and update if I hear anything! I'm guessing we passed the test since we were interviewed? Good luck!

Will definitely do. I am also a federal employee as well, but I had to do fingerprints. Not sure if matters what agency. Also, my interviewer did not know of a date. I called recently and was told not sure...also hiring freeze. Thank you for replying. I was getting worried. Good luck!!!

There's a hiring freeze? Ugh! I'm not sure if adjective or time in service matters, I'm a new employee and just did my fingerprints last year so that may make a difference. I would be moving too, although I am originally from the area, so I wish they would let us know asap! Do you think the fiscal year ending has anything to do with it?

Yes that's what I was told also there is a thread in this group about it. I didn't know at first either. And ok, maybe since you did fingerprints last year then. I am also from the area. I would like to know as well. I am making a lot of decisions and some are based upon this job. I truly do believe a lot of it has to go with FY17 budget. I don't believe it's passed yet. Same for agency I work for. It is also an election year.

Any news yet? Wish there was a number we could call that someone would actually answer! It's been almost a month, I'm getting a bit antsy

Called this morning, HR said they were still under a hiring freeze. He asked if I interviewedon't, he said the ones who interviewed would be first to know once the hiring freeze is lifted. So, I think if we made it to the interview they want us but are just waiting for the go ahead. I also asked if he expected the freeze to carry over to next fiscal year to which he replied that they really hope it doesn't but that they honestly don't know if it'll be lifted before. My thing is, don't these positions have to be cancelled and re advertised if they aren't filled within a certain amount of time? I don't mind waiting, if I have some sort of time-line!

Thanks kiwicali!!! Glad we were interviewed. Hopefully it ends with Fiscal Year....which is upon us. And I did think they had to close it out after a certain timeframe. Hopefully would not have to yes again. I really hope this announcement works for us.

Kiwicali heard anything? I haven't...however talked to a friend and she was told about possible furlough. Also someone just posted something in SSA Hiring Freeze which makes perfect sense. Nothing shaking until budget is passed probably. *sigh*

Hello! Not sure why the forum didn't send an email letting me know you responded :/ Any news? It turned out I did have to turn in my fingerprints, they sent me out a kit and I mailed it back the other day...(can you imagine my heart rate when I saw that number calling, only to find out they were sending a fingerprint kit)! I asked the woman if this meant they were moving forward, she said not rigjt note but she'd getting everything ready so that they can move quickly once they are able to. I did see another posting for the SSA, for MD I think, and it stated that the positions advertised were expected to be filled for the FY17...so while I know it's not the same location,it *may* be a good sign. I just wonder how long after the beginning of the new FY will we have to wait...the job posting for MD said they would be making selections spring/summer of FY17, but our position is already past most of the formalities it seems so I doubt it would take that long. Hope not anyway. Hope things are well on your end!
