VA (Department of Veterans Affairs)

The United States has the most comprehensive system of assistance for veterans of any nation in the world. This benefits system traces its roots back to 1636, when the Pilgrims of Plymouth Colony were at war with the Pequot Indians. The Pilgrims passed a law which stated that disabled soldiers would be supported by the colony. The establishment of the Veterans Administration came in 1930 when Congress authorized the President to "consolidate and coordinate Government activities affecting war veterans."

This forum also includes the Veterans Health Administration (VHA).

Perhaps you are working for the VA or interested in working for the VA. Here is a forum to share your experience with the VA.

It's too early to really shadow a VA social worker, as I am just starting grad school, but I'm curious, what do you do on a typical day? What style of interaction do you use with clients? If you are a GS-12 LCSW, what methods do you use to achieve your goals? Do you use transferrence psychotherapy, or do you actively give advice and recommendations, or does it depend?

Also, the Pathways VA internship looks interesting, but I don't see any positions on USA job near my school. Would it be possible to intern at a VA within 2 hours commute of my house? I live in Shreveport.

This is really two topics, but I figured I might as well ask all my additional questions in one post.

Transference psychotherapy is not likely to be a common method used by VA social workers because that is not an evidence-based treatment. Social worker duties will have the same variety within the VA that you will find outside. Some do case management primarily. Some do treatment primarily.

You should ask the Field placement coordinator of your MSW program about your internship commute question.
