Internal Revenue Service

As a bureau of the Department of the Treasury and as one of the world's most efficient tax administrators, the IRS role is to help the large majority of compliant taxpayers with the tax law, while ensuring that the minority who are unwilling to comply pay their fair share. (Source: www.irs.gov)

This forum will allow you to share and ask job-related questions about this bureau. This is NOT the place to ask tax questions.

Thanks bro, because I was referred for 2 position one month ago and the other 11 days ago. I was wondering who else is waiting to hear something back .

I am hoping CS79 and Taco would chime in with the inside information.

Today someone started on my team that was external. He doesn’t sit in my location so I couldn’t ask any questions.

It seems that the IRS is going to fill up most jobs with internals as per union agreement. They keep on opening roster announcements with multiple vacancies get our hopes high, needlessly. I have had it all and just given up on the jobs.

I wouldn't say that meinhoonna. I'm a Internal employee and we haven't heard anything back as well. At least you all got a CAT A. Some people I know including me would get a CAT A or BQ and we still got denied or not referred. However, just keep applying and contact the person in the job announcement. It's up to HR at this point.

A lot of internals are not even qualified for these positions, stay encouraged and continue to apply.

I would have to disagree with that statement. I have a M.Sc in Cybersecurity and trust me having a degree in internally means nothing. All of you have probably been referred for some type of position. I myself haven't even got that far in the application process. I have even got an ineligible for a GS5 in IT which only requires a B.Sc. It's not as easy as you think. Especially in the south east region's.

Poplou University of Maryland offer Cybersecurity Degrees. I also earned my Undergraduate degree from Bowie State which is also located in Maryland. Those two universities work very closely with alot of Federal agencies. I wouldn't select a University that's not accredited. Like I said before Internal employees do not instantly qualify nor get referred based on them being Internal. I'm not sure where you got your info from but it is very inaccurate. I've been with the IRS 10 years and have never seen an internal employee just automatically qualify or rank higher just because they're internals. If anything, HR is bringing aboard more externals than anything. PERIOD

I have not heard much inside. But it seems to be slowing down, I have not seen any orientations in a while, unless they started to use another room.

Only for temp new hires.

Quote:
Members of Congress have taken plenty of shots at the IRS over the past few years about the antiquity of some of its legacy IT systems, but members of the House have moved one step closer to giving the agency the freedom to hire in-demand tech talent more quickly and offer them pay that’s more competitive with the private sector.

The House Appropriations Committee on Tuesday approved a provision in the fiscal 2020 financial services and general government spending bill that would restore the IRS’s streamlined critical pay authority until September 2023.

That authority, which lapsed in 2013 after lawmakers failed to renew it, gives the agency the ability to hire short-term cyber and IT talent more quickly and at a rate beyond the General Schedule pay scale for career employees.

With this critical pay authority reinstated, the IRS could make up to 40 new hires at any one time, and bring those new temporary employees onboard within six-to-eight weeks.

By comparison, IRS Commissioner Chuck Rettig complained to lawmakers in April that it can take six-to-eight months to bring new career employees onboard. The hiring process has gotten so drawn out, he added, that promising prospective employees have withdrawn themselves from consideration.

...

“The IRS has lost 23,000 full-time employees since 2010 because of severe budget cuts, so the funding level approved today by the House Appropriations Committee represents a true turning point for the agency’s ability to restore its workforce and service levels to peak efficiency,” National Treasury Employees Union President Tony Reardon said in a statement Tuesday.

Critical pay authority would play a significant role in getting the IRS’ six-year Integrated Modernization Business Plan off the ground. The $2.7 billion IT modernization effort aims to replace hardware systems and modernize computer code that dates back to the John F. Kennedy administration
