Internal Revenue Service

As a bureau of the Department of the Treasury and as one of the world's most efficient tax administrators, the IRS role is to help the large majority of compliant taxpayers with the tax law, while ensuring that the minority who are unwilling to comply pay their fair share. (Source: www.irs.gov)

This forum will allow you to share and ask job-related questions about this bureau. This is NOT the place to ask tax questions.

I have some contacts that, like JohnS, received information and passed it along. My understanding from conversations I've had and read on this thread is that the IRS is working to get qualified people in spots asap. That's why you are seeing zero interviews conducted. There is heavy reliance on the HCO to identify who is qualified then "refer" them to the hiring manager. From what I know of the job market, finding qualified people takes a lot of time and there aren't a lot of people available because of the private sector growth. What you gain in "stability" with a government job, you lose in pay in the private sector. Many highly qualified IT people, especially software developers can pick and choose where they want to work.
We know from GerogaPeach and Cs79 that their "waves" have come. That means most internals have already been placed and it's time to backfill the remaining 1700 (1400 IT jobs) from the article we read about a few post above this. If this is in anticipation for the new tax season, that means they need bodies in the seat by October/November to get projects off the ground or to at least get people up to speed on any "changes" that need to be designed, tested, and implemented prior to tax season.
I'm no oracle but it's about time movement occurs. From the rumblings I've heard, it seems like September will be the initial month followed by harder to fill positions throughout the end of the year. That 1700 was the goal for this year since it's been a while that the IRS has been on somewhat of a freeze.

I'd be interested to hear what insiders think about this.

No internal contacts but few things that would speed-up hiring in general - FY money if that is even an actual factor and schools have started or going to pretty soon - end of vacations

I applied for two of the GS-5/7 IRS IT specialist positions that basically read like glorified helpdesk roles paying the 38K-50K range. My qualifications?

Education:

B.S. Political Science / double minors in HR management & business admin - state university, magna cum laude

A.A.S. Computer Programming - community college

Certificate - Desktop Support & Computer Networking

IT Certs: A+, Network+, Security+, Server+, Microsoft MCDST/MCP/MTA.

Programming experience - VB .NET/C#: I have a portfolio of LOTS of homebrew software that I've developed, including software that has hundreds of downloads and positive reviews by users. This portfolio is clearly noted on my USAJobs resume.

Work experience: 6 months as a network tech at a major global telecom and several years of professional law enforcement work.

My rating from the IRS? **NOT QUALIFIED** Poof. Done.

You're telling me all of that gets an immediate not qualified? For essentially a glorified helpdesk job pulling in 38K-50K? GTFO! In the private sector, I'm basically an instant hire for ANY job comparable to these.

The feds are screwed when it comes to IT recruiting because they screwed themselves. End of story.

Do you think you were "Not Qualified" due to actual work experience? If you were referring to me stating it's difficult to find qualified helpdesk workers, the answer would be no. I don't believe there is a lack of those out there. I'm talking more for the higher G11+ jobs where they'll likely have issues. A G11+ at 105K takes decades however someone could earn that in the private sector in a year.
I'm sure the IRS has no shortage of resumes and I would agree they have slowed down the process by grading the most minute detail of a resume. I'm also speaking from an outsider's view point and would encourage those inside to provide detail. I'm assuming you would need someone from HCO or at a management role who actually gets to review resumes. My understanding is that the HCO is reviewing qualifications. I'm also assuming those are going through some type of algorithm then some human who has looked at 100000 resume's has to review.

To your qualifications, obviously the programming is beneficial to have however it's much different to create home brews versus applications that follow an experienced, enterprise SDLC. Most of the questions prior to getting even to an "Application Received" status are likely the algorithm filters. Have you tried to change those answers? Again, I agree with you. Their practices likely filter out many qualified candidates. From the brief description, it looks like your actual work experience in IT was the time limitation even though you're credentialed via certificates. Did you obtain those through education?

Also - For those holding onto this like it's the end of the world if you don't get it. To Poplu's point, the private sector is expanding and there are many opportunities to be had.

I agree with the time frame listed above. Now that summer is over, many people are returning to work. We want these jobs because you get about 30+ days off a year. If you figure Summer is vacation season, I'm assuming not much was getting done between 07/04 and 09/03 !!!

While we wait, I want to ask a few questions for current employees and job seekers without starting a new thread. Given a choice of location, I am wondering which one would be a good choice. Anyone in the same situation?

What locations/states are you considering and why if you plan to relocate? I am trying to find out if anyone has information about the offices, staff, or general work environment in GA, TX, NC, DC or IL
What's the telework policy for IRS - I am sure it varies by department but maybe not. Let me start that I know of someone who does 4 x 10 and goes to the office one day a week in MD.

Edit: I am scanning through content on Glassdoor

Current GS-14 with the IRS. In most cases, after 1 year you are allowed to telework pending mgr approval and your work duties of course. A huge number of folks telework, especially the helpdesk personnel. Alot of employees work 4/10's and the other schedule (name escapes me at the moment) but you're basically off every other Friday or Monday by working 9 hours days one week and blah blah blah.... Location is an important part of being hired. A bunch of the IT security functions are located in New Carrolton, MD, alot of the infrastructure IT/Big data jobs are in Memphis, TN. I'm on the IT side of things so I'm more familiar with that area, but my location has hired a ton of folks at lower grades. I haven't seen many come in above GS-12 and the 12's are few and far between.

Again, congrats!

Can you share process (phone screen, etc.) and timeline for the selection. Is this in the same location you currently reside?

I applied in March
Got an email in mid July that said qualified and shortly afterwards referred.
Then Aug 8 showed selected and got a bunch of paperwork to do.
No interview.
Very close to home.

If you're in Accounts Management as a Contact Representative, telework is still a no-go even with the limited pilot still stumbling onward. There are very good reasons why 20,000 employees in the largest operating area are still not telework-eligible. Those won't be discussed in an open forum like this, though.

I went by the new workplace and got my fingerprints and ID done. The person there said that she heard that there will be another wave of people being hired in the near future. I'm not sure if that would be another USA jobs listing or use the ones from the Spring? Those jobs are open for a year.

Wave 4 - 09/02
Wave 5 - 09/16
Wave 6 - 09/30

Any left over by end of the year.
Currently based on recent postings - there are 400+ open spots, which is right on schedule.

I just received an automated 30-day notification email on a different job. I had to check which one that was for and has 2 vacancies (2 vacancies in the following locations: about 50 locations). Less hopeful with only two jobs

Edit: Any more updates that any insiders can share?

As a result, we will be referring your name to the Selecting Official. You may be contacted for an interview. If you are selected for this position, your qualifications will be verified prior to a firm offer being made and/or entering on duty” for the most recent IRS posting with 415 vacanies 18CE2-DHX0160-2210-11T14.

I wonder if this JOA is for 415 additional vacancies or are these for the remaining vacancies that haven’t been filled by the other IRS 2210 job announcements?

Not sure if 18CE2-DHX0160-2210-11T14 has any language about a tentative start date as that might a clue on how fast things would move.

Yup, good luck. What I meant by SSS site was if they showed his information along with language about not needing to register. What we need to know from N2018 (not sure why new users cannot post) is which location and the process (interview or simply selection)
