Hi all , I got two jobs offer one in the National park services as a contracting specialist and the other one in ICE DHS as a mission support assistant . I accepted both , I currently work in the Coast GUard and the park services accepted my BI and the process was very fast to clear me , ICE is taking a while since they have to go thru the investigation and all before I start working . I really don’t know what to do ... i always wanted to work in ICE but they are taking so long in ICE i would start as a GS6 and the ladder goes to a 7 , i heard good things about DOI and I would start in this job as GS5 step 5 and then the ladder goes to a 9 .....

Any advise or insight of this agency will be greatly appreciated
Thanks

You do know ICE and USCG are both in DHS and therefore have the same clearance requirements? Unless you are going to need a higher level than you currently possess, ICE should be faster.

Based on what you have posted though, the DoI job goes higher and would position you better. Plus ICE is a major political target right now...

You should have voted Cthulu...the greatest of all Evils

Yeah ... that is what I thought when I applied with ICE that they would take my BI since both are under DHS but what they told me was that they do their own BI and that they would take into consideration my BI but they would run their own ... so I’m here waiting .DOI was different and the process was very fast . I already accepted the offer and I already have my EOD .

After working for 5 years in the DOI and now I am working in the DOD I would go back to the DOI in a heart beat if I could.

I have worked for DOT and DOD, I'd give anything to work for DOI.

I even apply for DOI jobs in sucky areas trying to get in so I can transfer with the hopes of Denali or Yellowstone as a backyard some day.

I have worked for ICE as a Mission Support Assistant for years. I got stuck at the GS 7 step 10 . I do like my job and have finally been selected to the Mission Support Specialist job GS 9 and waiting to get my background done again even though I passed the one normal one a year ago. Here they only open GS 9's with no ladder to the GS 12 for years because of the low turnover. See if you can find out how many GS12's are in the office. We have 2 Supervisor GS 13's for 12 Mission Support Specialists GS 12's .

Contracting is where the future is. They are in very short supply and a great field to get into. If you are willing to move after get the experience under your belt, there are , in my experiences, many more opportunities to go all the way to a GS 15 a whole lot fast especially if you are willing to move to the east coast.

Best of luck to you in whatever path you take.
