Update:

Interviewed for OST position today. I asked if all OST are hired through CHI. Answer was a resounding 'No'. They said that they normally just hire interns since they already have backgrounds complete and knowledge of their work ethic. Said it's incredibly rare that this FO hires for that position through CHI.

Of course, there are other positions offered through CHI (although I believe the majority are OST). It seems the CHI is a last resort program. This may be different based on your chosen FO or job description.

Keep trying to contact your chosen FOs and see if they have openings.

It sounds like CHI isn't really worth applying for when you say it like that.

It's not worth playing the lottery until you find out you had the winning numbers in your pocket after the fact.

I'd say it's low-risk, low-reward. Only takes a few minutes to fill out the app. Maybe you get a call, maybe you don't. I wouldn't put all of my hope into it.

But if you do get a call, then your foot is in the door. They're entry-level positions. OST caps at GS8. But I've been told the OST particularly is a gateway to all other agency jobs. And if you let your supervisor know your plans, they can give you projects to boost your resume for that future position.

Yeah. I think there is one CHI position that goes to GS12, but most only go to GS8. They are meant to teach and develop all-aspects of the FBI mission before moving to a better position. They said avg stay of an OST at that FO is 2-3 years. One of the ppl interviewing me actually began as an OST.

Really it's just a foot in the door and ability to network.

Hello! I am confused as to what is going on with the application process? I have never been contacted, nothing changed for application status. I feel in the dark here. I know we had a shutdown, but at this point I would like some enlightenment. Thank you :)

Hey yall, so I had a phone interview for an OST position in Denver. Two and a half weeks passed and then I received an email asking for an updated transcript. That was 4 days ago, tonight I looked at my account and saw I had a notification from 3 days ago and when I try to click on it, it says the job opening is no longer available. Does that mean that I had a job offer but I took too long to open the message?

Hey guys,

So I was lurking through the thread and saw someone mention pay of an OST. I am a graduated intern who accepted a position and I’ll tell you now that from talking with other interns, most don’t want the OST position mainly because it’s pretty much the same work we do as an interns to an extent. As far as pay, OST’s can make more than a GS-8 because you are paid your GS level plus locality. Additionally, I have seen interns at a higher grade due to their educational background. The problem is many people don’t stay in OST positions long enough to reach the cap because there’s so many positions with amazing opportunities that one can move to. I was offered an OST position that paid relatively well. I didn’t accept the offer because there was another position I was more interested in that paid less than the OST offer I got. It is not a terrible starting pay for those who recently graduated with a bachelors degree. If you ever want to be an SA, you have an advantage over others whom have never stepped foot in a FBI office and don’t know their processes.

Also keep in mind that OST positions are not on FBI jobs. They are positions given to interns and CHI that are entry-level. I’ve spoken to agents who went from an OST position to being an Agent. It is not impossible and highly encouraged.

It also took me a whole year to get the internship, so I wouldn’t give up hope yet. They are slow and I get it. I received my final offer for the internship two days before I was supposed to report plus I chose a FO that wasn’t Close to me. I asked to be moved to a RA which was more reasonable for me given the timeframe I had. If this is something you really want to do, don’t give up.

SS is Surveillance Specialist. You can see the details on FBI jobs.

It’s wishful thinking if anybody thinks they’ll be making 60k as an OST starting. That’s just not how it works, but depending on the office and it’s locality, the pay will be decent. I personally wouldn’t stay in that position because it’s not what I want to do for the rest of my life, but it’s still rewarding and will prepare you for other positions.
