Internal Revenue Service

As a bureau of the Department of the Treasury and as one of the world's most efficient tax administrators, the IRS role is to help the large majority of compliant taxpayers with the tax law, while ensuring that the minority who are unwilling to comply pay their fair share. (Source: www.irs.gov)

This forum will allow you to share and ask job-related questions about this bureau. This is NOT the place to ask tax questions.

Just read that 45 signed an executive order canceling our raise while we’re in a shutdown lol. I think it’s time to start looking for employment elsewhere. Happy New Year everyone!

The Irishman ☘️ thought I was nuts saying we were likely to get stuck with 0.00%. Yet here we are.

I’m still pondering where exactly my resume could even be floated these days.

I am an ITAS and was off work Friday due to having AWS the 24th. So I had 5 days off. My manager called me Weds morning the 26th to inform me I was one of three scheduled to go in for shutdown procedures. I was there about 3 hours.
For us we had to call taxpayers and cancel appts.
Also we have to process checks and send tax returns to Fresno. Other than that only one employee is essential to process any payments that come in the mail for SBSE RO's and RA's since they don't use a check scanner.

Unemployment in my state requires an SF-50 or official letter stating I was put into furlough status. Never received anything in writing that I was furloughed.

I think you will be okay without it. None of us got an SF 50 and we don't have access to HR Connect.
Only thing we need is that PO Box address in Ogden, which I can't recall. Maybe someone that is Seasonal has it.

Great idea, thanks.

Our library put up signs informing that due to the shutdown they not offer any free tax prep services this year. Our post office has a sign up that they do not have mailing addresses for the IRS. Several tax prep offices in our area have signs that will remain closed until the shutdown is over.

Its the entire accounting and tax industry that supports millions of jobs that rely on the IRS being open.

VITA grants are 2 year appropriations, though. Us having SPEC shuttered is what is holding back VITA kick-off as well as grant disbursements. A friend teaching down at SMU said all their grant funds from the National Science Foundation have dried up since NSF is shuttered.

Our mailing addresses are on our website. My local post office stopped providing any help to TPs early in President Obama’s first term. It may be an MPO but it won’t stock forms.

As to the tax prep offices, we still haven’t dropped the press release for when the filing gate opens. TurboTax thinks it will be January 29th which is also the expected date for the State of the Union address. The default day would otherwise be January 22nd. I’m not offering a guess except to say this impasse is likely not being resolved on January 3rd.

I’ve got a 2-year T-note purchased being finalized tomorrow, a 4-week T-bill being finalized later in the week, and am trying to set up a tiny brokerage account to pick up some dividend-paying stocks. Picking up some unearned income seems called for. I’ve got a 4-week T-bill maturing January 15th and I have to decide if I reinvest it or take the proceeds now.

The emergency hotline says we are open and conducting business. Is this an error? It did say something else a few days ago.

If you are waiting for the message from your state's Senior Commissioner's Representative by following the normal "snow day" procedures, those messages may very well be wrong. Most of the SCRs got furloughed along with us according to the HCO pages of the shutdown plan except for 2-3 to watch for issues nationally. They're on standby in case there is a fire or civil disturbance at locations where people are actually on-duty.

The SCR for Ohio is still saying that everything is open and that all normal procedures are in effect as that was the last message that that SCR had put in place prior to appropriations lapsing. The SCR for Ohio hasn't updated the message as they're not on the excepted list. The message for Indiana is almost the exact same script that Ohio has. For those of us in CAMC Ops 3 & 4, it would indeed seem a wee bit contradictory. Until we get orders to the contrary from the correct channels, we're still out.

This was a key from the shutdown plan:

Quote:
EXCEPTED EMPLOYEE SUMMARY
Total # Excepted Employees 9,946
Percentage of Excepted Employees 12.5%
Total IRS Workforce (On-rolls November 10, 2018, per HRRC) 79,868

Once we hit filing season, that number of excepted employees may increase if this isn't already resolved by then.

Our library is Not a VITA site. Their volunteers are all teachers or accounting students. Program is funded by the local library property tax dollars. The library board funds computers, net connections and usually a volunteer to help patrons use online tax prep software. Usually by now our library has an appointment line open to use their tax prep resources.

The national message isn't playing anymore on the hotline. The Austin campus message is the one from right as the shutdown started, Dec. 21st at 11:15pm, telling us the same thing as the national message did, so nothing has changed for Austin. Non-excepted employees are still furloughed. I like that we're given dates on our messages in Austin.

The employee emergency page on irs.gov is still saying all non-excepted employees are furloughed and hasn't changed its instructions.

So if you don't hear a later date or something specific that shows it is post-shutdown given in the hotline message for where you are, and don't get a call from the IRS that you're identified as excepted and need to come in, I agree that whatever you hear on your location-specific hotline message isn't really saying things are open for you as the hotline message was probably last updated before the shutdown. Keep checking the employee emergency page at irs.gov and the hotline, but we know from the news that the shutdown hasn't been resolved yet.

The IVR burped then and somebody should tell the JOC Monitoring Room. I just dialed in and it is still up.

I haven't heard a thing, but I have fully expected them to tell us that we are essential 1/7.

Another reason why I wouldn't rush to put in for unemployment. It could create a mess, because you really couldn't put in claims if you are back working, even though it will be for delayed compensation.

January 7th would put us on the first Monday of the first pay period after the mainframe is supposed to come back up. The last alert I saw said it was either very late in the day on the East Coast on either Wednesday or Thursday that the mainframe will come back up after having already been down for several days. OPA is still down and other peripherals are likely still down too.

I am not holding my breath and have plenty of projects to work on at home.

The employee emergency page has been updated today with an SF-8 posted and a barely updated Shutdown FAQs. Why do I say barely updated? If you remember the "technical shutdown" we had in February where the bill was passed through both chambers at 5 AM EST but POTUS wouldn't roll out of bed to sign it until 9 AM EST...it still has answers from that debacle. App 55 was a nightmare that day with many TACs not opening.

Apparently Democrats have a plan for Thursday that is DOA before it technically has even been introduced. These modern times bring strange and new wonders! :-)

Have a happy new year everybody! I intend to celebrate and keep looking at other avenues of employment.

I believe we should apply for unemployment.

I did try the suggested options for working with creditors and utilities. I have a small loan paid up months in advance. The creditor and the utilities both cited IRS rules on bartering to reject barter as a form of payment. My utilities will not accept the IRS creditor letter and cited recent reforms for allowing added late fees/fines and interest.

My local big box grocery store does not hire limited term workers to help pay the grocery bills. Perhaps the "right to work" should of helped us all find stop gap jobs.

Luckily our employment office has free job retraining programs I can enroll in.

One of our community groups is offering a free meal for the unemployed tomorrow. I am going to volunteer. Not sure if I can eat the free meal so I'll bring my own.

Wishing everyone a Happy New Year.

What is the employee emergency page that has the SF 8?

Happy 2019!
Hang in there everyone.
By next week I will apply for unemployment and just pay it back. The last paycheck will go towards rent. But fortunately I dont have a car note or much debt. No children to feed. Those of you that have kids apply for emergency SNAP benefits in your state.

This should be a wake up call to us all. Anything can happen!!
Sadly it shouldn't be at the hands of politicians playing with our livelihood.
I believe in Laws of Attraction and I attract good things!
