Disability Retirement

The federal government allows employees who are unable to work to retire under a disability retirement. It is in the best interest of both employees and the federal government for employees to remain gainfully employed in their current grade or pay level, as long as they can provide useful and efficient service without endangering themselves, others or government property.
Disability retirement should be the very last option and should be used only when attempts have been made to preserve an individual's employment, and those attempts have failed.

Order our Disability Retirement guide to educate yourself on the rules and regulations concerning disability retirement for federal employees.

Hi all, just received my letter from OPM today that I was approved for my DR. I am so thrilled!!!!

timeline:
applied April 2018

did have a lawyer

I am so relieved to know it's been approved because as we all know it's been a long hard road. Glad it's almost over. Now is the wait to get my money & TCC premiums reimbursed. Any timeline on this?

How long does it take to get FEHB back? Mine is ending shortly so hope they can just continue it now before I lose it. Any thoughts on this anyone?

Congratulations on approval!! I was approved in October and they still have not assigned me to an annuity specialist.

Congratulations. Let us know if you see any payments at all. Seems to be a bunch of us waiting months now that haven't seen any interim or back payments at all. My approval was in October and haven't heard or received a thing from them since. Maybe you'll have better luck!

That’s what I mean, I have not seen money, FEHB, you name it. I am not alone here. Maybe you will have better luck. Talked to a person at the 888 number whom said that I was not assigned to anyone yet. I applied in the summer of 2016, so I am used to it.

Oh boy I hope I don't have to wait that long! I'm going to call OPM & I'll keep you all posted.

Thanks Navygirl.

So I called OPM today to find out when I could get FEHB & back pay. OPM is working & are not furloughed so that's good news. They told me they send the same letter to my agency as I got & my agency has to send back my SF3100 to them. They said it usually takes less than 30 days & I should call back in 10 days. Thankfully my agency was not furloughed. I will of course keep on top of it & will let you all know.

Congrats Catspaw - glad to hear another approval is received. I was approved in November 2018 and have yet to receive anything other than the letter approving me. Thanks for the share that OPM isn't furloughed...

Without seeming as naive as I am about this process where can I get the number you are calling to see our status? Can't hurt I guess to have another one of us call to see what they say. I know there is others that have had a worse fight and wait than I so I am thankful I was approved but honestly our goal is compensation. I'm all to familiar with the stress of waiting and bills piling up so I'm hoping there is a light at the end of the tunnel for us real soon.

I stand corrected - my bank account today has a significant deposit in it from OPM. I was approved the week before Thanksgiving. Hope all you expecting $$ are experiencing the same phenomena any day now.

Nada on my end. I will try and find a contact number tomorrow. I am hoping the person in charge of injury comp in my district doesn't have anything to do with info submitted to OPM or I will be waiting years if anything is submitted at all. Sadly I am not joking. I do believe they changed her title from injury Comp specialist to some general human resource title. Please tell me local district offices have nothing to do with request returns to OPM and it is located elsewhere.

Glad to see some of us are getting the money due us.

What about getting FEHB reinstated? I need that back ASAP so anyone have any information as to how long that took? And who to call?

I've mentioned this before as many of us went a year or more with NO FEHB. We have yet to hear from anyone who paid for their own TCC and was able to get a refund from the National Finance Center. We have plenty of posts on it though. Since you were fired your agency didn't extend up to 12 months FEHB while waiting in LWOP. When finalized you might be given certain options (restart FEHB from the date you last worked, start FEHB from today's date, or restart FEHB at a mutually agreed future date). Getting a premium refund however for coverage obtained by you for TCC, Obamacare, or any private insurance company will probably not be a reimbursable option, why should it be?

I am hoping you are wrong about getting FEHB reinstated sooner than one year after we get approved for disability & getting back TCC payments. TCC should be reimbursed as well as pay from the last time we were Feds. I did not want to leave the government but was forced too due to my health so TCC should be reimbursed. Maybe no one wanted to post they got it back. We all have to be very careful what we post here as big brother is watching so I take everything with a grain of salt. We can also go to court & sue the government for noncompliance. If you read OPM disability it appears everything should be reinstated. I hope so!

BTW everyone here said it would take one year to get disability approved & I got mine approved in 8.5 months from the time I applied. Every case is different.

Congrats on the quick payments to those that have received theirs.
I called the number on the bottom of my approval letter this a.m. I was told my file is in Washington. She claimed they sent me a letter in early December (My approval was Oct.) asking for more medical. I was put on hold for a bit as she was trying to figure out why they would need more medical after an approval. She never was able to find out. I'd swear but thinking I had to have misunderstood her that she said they sent the request to me 8 times. (lol) The only thing she could tell me was my file is on hold in Washington and I need to write them a letter asking when I will receive benefit payments. I'm wondering if there may be another phone number in Washington. Asking and waiting for answers to questions via snail mail is a little 18th century I think. Especially when you are anxiously waiting for payments and bills are piling up.
If anyone here hasn't checked and was approved months ago maybe you should check on yours. I would have no idea it is sitting in limbo as I have received nothing from OPM since the approval.

I know it took 2.5 years for my friend wwill84751 to get his FEHB back for his family, look for his posts here. Always joked that he must have had the healthiest family around. You should get your FEHB back, retroactive to the last day in employment provided you pay all your co premiums taken at finalization. Getting TCC premium payments refunded is another story. I was sharing with you that many of us suffered with no care for months, had to pay out of pocket for continued treatment and medicines. Those payments in theory can be rebilled to your FEHB plan if its within the 180 day retro billing period.

Here is a great thread on the subject!

I will stay on top of this & let everyone know. I did call National Finance Center today & they are on furlough with only a skeleton crew. OPM told me to call back in 10 days & I will- at least they were not furloughed. Seems like it was a bad time to get approved.

Greetings,

I find that there is never a reason to be cautious of what you say if you are doing the right things. I seriously doubt "everyone here" has said that it would take a year for approval. In contrast everyone here generally admits that asking "how long will it take" questions are wasteful because there is no set time period, no set sequence that OPM works claims, and each individual case is different.
