Disability Retirement

The federal government allows employees who are unable to work to retire under a disability retirement. It is in the best interest of both employees and the federal government for employees to remain gainfully employed in their current grade or pay level, as long as they can provide useful and efficient service without endangering themselves, others or government property.
Disability retirement should be the very last option and should be used only when attempts have been made to preserve an individual's employment, and those attempts have failed.

Order our Disability Retirement guide to educate yourself on the rules and regulations concerning disability retirement for federal employees.

Another update ***

Here is an update to my timeline

6/7/19 - Hired my attorney

10/18/19 - Application sent to OPM

11/6/19 - Received my CSA#

12/23/19 - Assigned to medical claims specialist

*** 1/6/20 - Letter arriving today from OPM/Boyers

Just got my daily mail scan email that shows the envelope from OPM/Boyers will be in my mail this afternoon. Doesn't appear to be certified, but I could be wrong? Maybe a request for more information? I'll update again this evening after I get the mail.

It was a request for some additional medical documentation. I will update again when I hear back from OPM

Greetings,

I sympathize with your frustration. I received a like letter during the process. Took 5 more months for approval, but that was back during the backlog days. Hopefully your attorney will submit it quickly.

Update on my timeline:

Stopped working in Feb, LWOP and regular leave.

Submitted with the help of Mr. McGill in Aug 2019. Forget the exact date.

CSA number: 13 Sep 2019

Assigned a a "Disability Claims Specialist today: 14 Nov 2019.

Approval letter received 17 Dec 2019

First interim/initial payment received 22 Jan 2020

Any clue what the timeline is to get this entire thing finalized, will I randomly get a backpay deposit? (Todays timeline) I'm owed at least 8-10 mos worth. Money has been very tight.

Congrats RasRoe. I can only offer you my experience.
Approved 10/21/19
First interim Dec 2019 ( for Oct and Nov
Jan1 - interim payment
Called today inquiring about restoration of FEHB, and FEGLI, was told information was received 12/27/19, and that finalization and restoration of benefits could take 20-26 weeks to finalize. I am owed over 2 years of back payments as well. I guess it’s “hurry up and wait”
