VA (Department of Veterans Affairs)

The United States has the most comprehensive system of assistance for veterans of any nation in the world. This benefits system traces its roots back to 1636, when the Pilgrims of Plymouth Colony were at war with the Pequot Indians. The Pilgrims passed a law which stated that disabled soldiers would be supported by the colony. The establishment of the Veterans Administration came in 1930 when Congress authorized the President to "consolidate and coordinate Government activities affecting war veterans."

This forum also includes the Veterans Health Administration (VHA).

I am curious as to what happens next, I received email today 07-01/2019 that my application has been referred to hiring manager. However, there were only 4 vacancies available I applied for both, Duluth Ga, and Austin, TX. Does anyone know if they interview everyone that was referred or how many are usually referred to the hiring manager?

What happens now is the interminable wait begins. They will take the stack of applications that cleared the first hurdle and send them to the hiring official. The HO will typically form a team to review the app's and narrow the pile down to 5 to 10 that look good. Then they will rank those and maybe contact the top 3-5 for interviews.

There's a good chance that you'll never hear anything else from them so it's best to forget about it and keep applying for anything that looks like a fit for you.

I've been on the rating panel for several vacancies at my office in the VA. For one, we had ~30 applications that were referred by HR; we racked and stacked them and the the hiring manager interviewed the top 3. For another (technically it was one announcement for three positions though only one ended up being filled), HR referred ~95 applications, and after we racked and stacked them, the hiring manager interviewed the top 7.

Thanks for the information! I received another update this morning, that says under the application status where it states “referred” I notice now that it says Among the Best Qualified Candidates and been referred for the next step in the selection process. The only difference I see with the notifications from yesterday and this morning, is that I did not see the statement among best qualified candidates when I checked USAjobs status. I will just keep looking and watching for emails and taking your advice to keep applying. Once again, thanking you in advance for much needed information.

Without knowing the job series and grade(s), can't even guess at how many were referred. I have sat on panels where several hundred were referred...we had a panel cut that down to 50, then the panel I was on cut that down to the top 5 who we interviewed.

The higher the grade and/or more specialized the job series, the fewer people referred. GS-5 Admin Assistant...could be a thousand or more referred if the hiring manager didn't work with HR to create some qualifying filters beforehand.

You should have voted Cthulu...the greatest of all Evils
