So, within eight months I'll be putting in for Army retirement. What's the scope of events I need to cover between then and now? Civilian, returning to the mainland.

Request a Retirement estimate from HR. Check everything on it. Need to make sure your SCD for retirement is correct. This is especially important for any breaks in service. They will also validate your retirement contributions, and let you know if you have any periods of service where you could pay a deposit to have it count for your annuity.

I have seen some people get shocks, like finding out they were in the wrong retirement system, or owed way more in interest on previously refunded service. It will give you peace of mind to find out the situation before you actually retire.
