Can someone please clarify how it works when taking a new position in a different series? I am currently GS11 step 4. I am looking to switch to the 0201 series. I have a Masters in HR which makes me fully qualified as a GS 9. However, I lack specialized experience as the 11 in this series. The position in the 0201 series is a 9/11/12 ladder. Will they be required match my current salary? How quickly will I move to the GS11 under the new series? I am getting conflicting information. I've been told that the move to 11 can happen as soon as the next pay period after EOD. Also, would I be required to serve a year before GS12? I have been an 11 for 4 years.

From what I can tell you would come on board as a GS-9 since you lack the specialized experience. Since this is a voluntary downgrade you are not guaranteed a salary match although they may but that is their call. Normally a ladder position you spend a year as a 9 then another year as an 11 before getting to the 12. You have TIG for a particular series but not the new one. Good luck.

Thanks so much for your response. This is what I expected. I believe the series that I'm currently in is agency specific, and will yield little to no growth opportunities. As the 0201 series is found in every agency, it may be worth the temporary grade decrease. Especially if they are able to retain my current pay.

I would not sell you short.

How many years do you have? How different is your job vs this one

I'm currently in the 0105 series (Social Insurance Administration) with SSA. I have 5 years experience in that series. However, I do have many years of private sector administrative and operations experience. I'm searching in some of the other series as well that I might be able to lateral or promote into (Administrative Officer perhaps).

But will the change of series require another probation period? Best guess, salary will remain. Minimum 12 months GS9. Minimum 12 month GS11. Delay of months or years from GS11 to GS12. No one will answer all of the questions in advance as no one has all of the answers. No one can predict the future actions of the future hiring manager. Experience if of no value. It would appear you and you alone want to change series so the employer has all of the leverage.
