I graduated from school not too long ago and am now working as a regular federal government employee. One of the things that attracted me to civil service was the stability and decent retirement.

However based on recent events it seems like the country is beginning to go into a tailspin. I'm beginning to get the feeling that economic growth is going to dip for a while and the politicians are planning to blow out the spending on social programs to the point that severe austerity measures are needed. Maybe not today or tomorrow, but I have a feeling it'll happen sometime in the next 30 years before I retire.

So I'm wondering how secure is federal retirement? Can it be severely reduced or outright taken away if the country goes broke? Does it make sense to jump ship now before I invest too much time?

Jump ship to what?
The gubmint will be the last thing to fall.
The only other career field I can think of is Commercial Astronaught so you can get out of Dodge when it hits the fan.

Reminds me of an old friend who worked himself up into a panic over the national debt, desperate to find some more secure investment than a government T-bill. After enduring yet another tirade about presumed vulnerability all I could say was if the US did 'go bankrupt', we would all have a whole lot more to worry about than the ROI.

Yeah, this.

To the OP, us old timers can remember an endless stream of things that were going to spell the end of the US, or society, or the human race, or the planet. It's just fear mongering by people who have something to gain by making you panic.

Let's see, I'll try to list some that I can remember. You'll laugh at some of these but I assure you, they are things that captivated the news media for months/years...

Walking catfish
Killer bees
the ozone hole
Japan/Saudi Arabia/China buying up the US
Toxins in the water supply becoming aerosolized - don't take showers
Fluoride in the water supply will cause cancer
Non-stick pans cause cancer
aluminum pans cause alzhimer's
Anti-perspirant spray contains aluminum, causes cancer
swallowing bubble gum will clog your liver
the security strip in US bills is a tracking device so the gov't can tell how much money you have
AIDS will be spread by mosquitoes and kill everyone
Giant asteroids will extinguish life on the planet
The earth's magnetic field will flip, north becomes south and vice versa
global warming
global cooling
fire ants
alligators in sewers
running out of fresh water
global overpopulation
the Soviet Union
Nuclear war
Social unrest

And yet, we're still here. As GWPDA noted, if the US collapses, your retirement account will be the last thing you need to worry about. Now, I'm still on the fence about alligators in sewers.

Curious...

A look at posts by the OP leads here...

to a post by username SJSamurai, where he says he's retired. Maybe he's using his Dad's account?

Yes, that's my super woke alter ego identity. It identifies as a retired federal employee.

Problably an account created by a nation-state (google it) to spread fear, uncertainty, and doubt (FUD) within the USA. lol

Anyway, https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Woke

Woke (/ˈwoʊk/) as a political term of African-American origin refers to a perceived awareness of issues concerning social justice and racial justice.[1] It is derived from the African-American Vernacular English expression "stay woke", whose grammatical aspect refers to a continuing awareness of these issues.

In other words, the OP more than likely don't know how to use "woke" appropriately or does not know what it really means.
