You know, we're always reading about management, letter carriers (lots of THOSE stories), clerks and what you NEVER read about are custodians.

Well...that changed today.

Welcome to all custodians...even those in denial.

================================

Federal agents on Thursday arrested a custodian who they said stole $15,000 in checks and cash while working at an Essex County post office.

Mark Gregory Jr., 27, of East Orange, swiped checks from the mail stream and cash paid by customers at a Maplewood post office, U.S. Attorney Craig Carpenito said.

Gregory deposited those checks into his own bank accounts in New Jersey and elsewhere, Carpenito said.

If he said he did it "while working", wouldn't that be an alibi? Or at least a basis for an incompetence defense? He should argue his managers allowing him to be paid what he is for what he doesn't do is a bigger theft. Having so much t5me on his hands is the real crime.

UPDATE.... the dude was a contract custodian.

https://www.nj.com/news/...hecks-cash-feds-say.html

A contract custodian was arrested Thursday and charged with stealing nearly $15,000 in checks and cash from an Essex County post office where he worked, federal authorities said.

In one case, a customer told a clerk at the Maplewood Avenue post office that an individual using the name "Mark Gregory'' deposited two checks written by the customer from a bank to a corporate entity, a U.S. Postal Inspection Service inspector said in a criminal complaint.

Contractor? That ruined the story.

My favorite postal story was the young man in Chicago (?) who put in a COA and forwarded UPS' corporate headquarters mail to his apartment. Got away with it for longer than you would have expected.

I thought it would be funny to forward USPS headquarters' mail, but I suspect someone up there would not have a sense of humor about it. The lack of a sense of humor I perceive in mgmt has stopped me from doing a lot of things at my office that would have been hilarious.

What a maroon.

But . . . wouldn't you or anyone else in your office be suspicious of the custodian flipping through mail?

On the other hand, it's New Jersey. Could have been someone's relative.

This never gets old. If it's rockin', don't come knockin'.

"It's NJ could have been someone's relative."
