Department of Defense

The Department of Defense (DoD) is charged with coordinating and supervising all agencies and functions of the government relating directly to national security and the United States armed forces. The mission of the Department of Defense is to provide the military forces needed to deter war and to protect the security of our country.

The Department of Defense is America's oldest and largest government agency -tracing its roots back to pre-Revolutionary times. Today, the Department is not only in charge of the military, but it also employs a civilian force of thousands. With over 1.4 million men and women on active duty, and 718,000 civilian personnel, DoD is the nation's largest employer. Another 1.1 million serve in the National Guard and Reserve forces. More than 2 million military retirees and their family members receive benefits.

Perhaps you are working for the DoD or interested in working for the DoD. Here is a forum to share your experience with the DoD.

My wife is currently doing onboarding after receiving TJO to Korea. We were talking and the tour length was brought up...Went back to job posting and tour length 36 or 24 months is missing. So I looked at the other locations she applied for in Japan, Europe...none of the postings mention "tour length" or transportation agreement requirements. Her TJO did not even mention the transportation agreement or tour length.

Did something change? I know in the past places like Europe, Japan were/are 36 month tours and Okinawa is/was a 24 month tour and it was listed in USAjob postings in the past.

The overwhelming number of DoD jobs are 36 months unless specified otherwise. Usually 12-24 months tours are for hardship tours (iraq, afgahnaistan, rtc) or places which are unaccompanied with little logistical support (romainia, DMV areas, etc.)

I agree, but tour lengths were always listed in the announcements in the past. Okinawa is almost always 24 months and not considered a hardship tour. Now I don't see 12 / 24 / 36 months listed in some OCONUS job postings.

Going through and reading random job postings on USAJOBS for OCONUS I find it, tour length, in some but not in others. I am sure a "Transportation Agreement" form will show in her email eventually, but so far just physical, background, dependent, and other forms so far.

Funny after my wife started corresponding with HR over there after TJO, the HR lady ask: you are not here in country? How are you getting here, coming with your husband? My wife had to explain...No you are paying for me to come there per "PCS entitlements are authorized" in the job posting. Hr was like oh....your right, sorry.
