Hello,

I have been given a Tentative Offer for a 2 year TERM Not To Exceed 8. I am new to federal and wondering what the end goal could be? I am 30% disabled Vet and want to look at the likeliness for a position to either follow, or be converted. Any inputs are helpful.

Thanks in Advance,

MoMo

Endgame is going to be find a permanent position on your study station as fast as you can before that position is finished. Term is exactly what it is with slim chance it is converted to permanent. I went perm to term to perm. HRs could probably answer if probation counts towards status. If you don't have a job currently, definitely take it.

The conventional wisdom is that the potential for non-competitive conversion to permanent status must be mentioned in the original announcement. If that verbiage is not in the original announcement, then you will need to apply to an announcement for a permanent position to get converted.

(I hope one of our HR experts will weigh in on that statement as there may be certain exceptions)

Remember that a "term" position also qualifies for FERS, so if you can hang on to that position for five years you'll be vested in the pension. You can also participate in TSP. But hopefully you will have converted before then, and your "term" time should carry right over... except for any required probation period, you will probably have to start all over once you reach that "career conditional" status.
