Internal Revenue Service

As a bureau of the Department of the Treasury and as one of the world's most efficient tax administrators, the IRS role is to help the large majority of compliant taxpayers with the tax law, while ensuring that the minority who are unwilling to comply pay their fair share. (Source: www.irs.gov)

Hi Everyone,

I recently accepted a firm offer letter for an IRS Clerk position. A week later I receive an email asking me to accept a tentative offer letter for the Tax Examiner position I also had applied for.

I rather take the Tax Examiner role as it has better pay and hours but I don't want to risk losing the Clerk position it says I have been hired for. I have considered just starting as a Clerk and once I have started change roles internally if that is possible. I have emailed the IRS HR inquiring on how to proceed with no response after 3 days. I called their phone a dozen times and nobody picks up. I was hoping someone here might have some input and or guidance on how best to proceed. Thank you!

Going to have to take one or the other. You have to have been in your position a year before you can move to another internally.

This is terrible advice. I've seen people move much sooner.

Good evening, my advice is reach out to the person who extended the offer directly if possible. If not I'd accept both. If the TE position is a 5-7 take it. If the clerk position starts out at a grade 5 you can't go wrong either way. If you don't want phone positions go clerk. They're very few TE positions that have no phone interaction. Evaluate your goals as well.

Then take the TE position but don’t bail on the clerk position until you have a firm offer for TE.
